Free agent takes part in St Mirren bounce match

Hearts have taken the French midfielder Yann Songo’o on trial as they look to further reinforce their squad.

The 28-year-old is a free agent after his contract expired at Scunthorpe United. He played 45 minutes of Wednesday’s bounce game at St Mirren, which Hearts won 2-1.

The Hearts manager Robbie Neilson is keen to sign a central midfielder before the new season starts. He will continue to assess Songo’o over the coming days before deciding whether to offer a deal.

Songo’o is a physical player who can offer strength in the engine room but also favours a passing style of play.

Born in Toulon, he represented France at under-16 level before going on to play for Cameroon’s under-20 side.

At club level, he was previously on the books at Plymouth Argyle, Blackburn Rovers and Sporting Kansas City and enjoyed a loan spell at Ross County in 2014.

Songo’o played twice against Hearts for County, scoring a consolation goal in Dingwall in January 2014 as the Edinburgh club won 2-1.

Neilson has already added five new recruits to his squad since returning to Tynecastle Park as manager in June.

Recent arrivals Jordan Roberts and Josh Ginnelly impressed during the match in Paisley. Craig Gordon made his first appearance in goal and winger Elliott Frear came on as substitute.

Goalkeeper Ross Stewart, a loan capture from Livingston, was also on the bench.
