5. It's all about who you know
Most of my friends who have been successful in the Edinburgh rental market have got a hand up through connections in the city. It works well for some, but makes life more difficult for those who don't know anyone here.
6. Buying feels far off
When you're looking for a place to rent in the Capital, getting on the property ladder feels like a distant dream. Judging by the data, that sensation is backed up by reality for the majority of young people.

Despite recent attempts to crack down on short-term lets, many agents remain unwilling to offer the security of a long-term tenancy.
8. It's almost impossible with pets
Although it wasn't a factor in my search, it was striking to see how few agents offer properties to tenants with pets.
