As a member of the Fairground Association Great Britain, which is a club for fairground enthusiasts and which supports the work of the travelling showmen, I find it concerning when any fairground attraction or fair in its entirety is shelved (‘Attraction dropped over screaming complaints’, News 3 October. The Power Tower ride in George Street at Christmas 2017 was a very popular ride and indeed I was even brave enough to have a shot myself and enjoy the stunning views across the city before being plunged back towards the ground at a million mph. I am saddened to see that the ride will not be returning to the city this year. I understand that George Street might not be the best location for this ride but surely a suitable piece of hard-standing ground can be sourced nearby? What about having Christmas events at other locations in the city. Perhaps Christmas stalls and rides could be placed on the promenade at Portobello or Silverknowes? It is not the first time there have been problems with funfairs in Edinburgh and I get the impression that Edinburgh is an anti-funfair city. There are often complaints about events held in the Meadows and now the Revolving Power Tower has been axed. How come many other cities and towns have very successful funfairs without complaints or serious incidents? As we speak the two biggest funfairs in the UK are in the process of being erected. These are the Nottingham Goose Fair and The Hull Fair and nearby Kirkcaldy has the mile-long Links Market every April along their seafront. Perhaps the people of Edinburgh need to get a sense of fun and stop their constant moaning and join in all the thrills and screams at the most magical time of year in the city Mr Alastair Macintyre, Webster Place, Rosyth, Fife
