Murrayfield curlers Gina Aitken and Bruce Mouat continued the countdown to next month's World Championships in Canada by picking up a bronze medal at the Hungarian Mixed Doubles Cup in Budapest.

The four-time Scottish champions had gold in mind after winning their first five matches in Hungary, but they went down 9-7 in yesterday’s semi-finals to Russian duo Maria Komarova and Daniil Goryanchev, who later went on to win the final.

That left Aitken and Mouat in a third place play-off with local favourites Ildiko Szekeres and Gyorgy Nagy, which they dominated 7-3 after pipping the same couple 8-7 last Thursday.

Fellow Scots Judith and Lee McCleary exited at the quarter-final stage.
