CARE homes have reported shocking levels of violence among elderly residents, new figures for East Lothian have revealed.
The freedom of information statistics show that Eskgreen Old People's Home in Musselburgh recorded 44 incidents and Fa'side Lodge Old People's Home in Tranent recorded 28.

An East Lothian Council spokeswoman reportedly said: "Whether it is someone being hit by a thrown cup or hit with a walking stick, it is recorded."

1st East Lothian story in 2 weeks, and it's about mental pensioners acting like teenage thugs.

Did an Evening News journalist contact East Lothian Council for clarification about this story? No.

No mention about the public enquiry into the abuse of Cockenzie House residents by the actions of the Care commission and ELC then. I think having your home taken away and months of stress for relatives rates as more significant especially when it is done by the bureaucracy.

blah Blah.......ELC were doing their job. You will not get to know the facts as they are CONFIDENTIAL. Residents were abused in the home , the care commission were unhappy and ELC did something about it. Do you understand?

#4 I understand very well. My father was one of those residents. The only abusers were the Care Commission who rode through the place like plundering invaders. They listened to nobody and they told blatant lies to many people including me.
I actually got the Care Commission manager to tell me what the problems were and they were 2 trivial issues of paerwork which had actually been addressed. I went to a meeting with her where she told us the standard of care was very good.
Don't forget this all started because some disrgruntled and sacked employee vowed to wreak vengeance on the home. Well he did that and 21 people died over a period of time when on average 5 people died in previous years.

Ian down under - you are entitled to hold onto your views. I am sorry to hear about your father. I however have some first hand experience in this and can assure you there were serious issues unresolved by the home management.

I gather from the article that it is violence of resident upon resident we are talking about here.
Are the incidences of violence and verbal abuse of staff by residents recorded. I suspect not because we are talking about senile, demented, and confused elderly.
This may be a reason for some to "get away with it"
but for others it is an excuse, either way staff have to tolerate having their boobs grabbed and their privates groped, as well as foul verbal abuse there is no comeback for them they just have to put up with it.
I trust I will still have the wit to feign dementia and get away with sexual assualt when my loving young daughters shunt me off to a retirement home because they can't look after me any longer. I'll have a feeled
day with these luuuuvly young nurses.
Before any of you deign to cry outrage, My wife is the one who has to put up with this now, whilst the profiteering mismanagement of the establishment stand back and claim they don't know what to do!
