THREE boys from Mayfield have pledged to tie themselves to their favourite tree in a bid to save it from property developers.
Connor McCallion, 11, his brother Jay, six, and their friend Kieran Hosie, ten, have also reportedly organised a petition to try and stop builders from bulldozing the beech tree.

Known locally as the "monkey tree", it has been climbed by generations of local children.

Connor, a pupil at St Luke's Primary School in Dalkeith, reportedly said: "They are taking all the places that we can play in away.

"I used to play football in this big field but that's gone now as well."

Boy Wonder,

"They are taking all the places that we can play in away."

The boys have got that right. It's all prime land for building now!

So, as Cat Stevens once remarked in a song ...

Well I think its fine, building jumbo planes.
Or taking a ride on a cosmic train.
Switch on summer from a slot machine.
Yes, get what you want to if you want, cause you can get anything.

I know we've come a long way,
We're changing day to day,
But tell me, where do the children play?

Well you roll on roads over fresh green grass.
For your lorry loads pumping petrol gas.
And you make them long, and you make them tough.
But they just go on and on, and it seems that you can't get off.

Oh, I know we've come a long way,
We're changing day to day,
But tell me, where do the children play?

Well, you've cracked the sky, scrapers fill the air.
But will you keep on building higher
til there's no more room up there?
Will you make us laugh, will you make us cry?
Will you tell us when to live, will you tell us when to die?

I know we've come a long way,
We're changing day to day,
But tell me, where do the children play?

Good lads!!! Fair play to you!

EEN - Why aren't you organising an on-line petition to help these boys?!?
