BUS drivers in the Capital are being offered cash incentives to inform on passengers who use fake tickets.
Lothian Buses admits it operates a "league table" of rewards for drivers who seize forged passes from those trying to use them.

The company said the scheme helped to highlight the importance of drivers remaining vigilant about fraudulent tickets.

Rewards include £50 for drivers who spot a forged Day Ticket and £25 for those who find passengers attempting to use an altered concession pass issued by the Scottish Government.

Bosses say that keeping a cap on the number of fraudulent tickets helps keep fares down.

One passenger, who asked not to be named, said: "I was on the number 29 and I noticed the driver had a yellow sticker on his dashboard. There seemed to be a sliding scale to reward drivers who managed to spot fake tickets.

"The idea seems to be that drivers file a report and then pick up their reward."

George McKendrick, Lothian Buses' operations manager, said: "It is designed to raise the awareness of fraudulent tickets to both drivers and passengers, which in turn allows us to keep fares at the lowest level as possible."

Earlier this week, the full details of fresh cuts to Lothian Buses services were revealed, with bus bosses blaming "city-wide roadworks" and the economic downturn for the move.

Five routes are set to be withdrawn or cut back, while nine others will run less frequently.

The council is proposing to spend £26,400 to save one of the under-threat routes, the X48 to Ratho, for the next few months. It says withdrawing it could "isolate" the community.

The news follows Lothian Buses' decision to cut 11 routes last month. The company says passenger numbers have been badly hit by tram works and other roadworks, and are down seven per cent on last year.

In September, councillors approved a £124,000 rescue plan to give a temporary reprieve to five of the 16 routes which Lothian Buses planned to axe or cut, but 11 routes were completely cut or reduced on October 5.

This included withdrawing the 20, the 60, and the N11 and N27 night bus services. The Saturday 17 was scaled back, and the 24 and 26 were reduced in the evenings.

Bosses have said future fare increases would be across all of the ticket types, as opposed to April's 10p increase just on adult single tickets.

Is this a good idea?

Arran Brown, 26, CAD technician, Tollcross: "I don't like it and I don't see the point. Drivers should be checking them as part of their job."

Yvonne Weighand Lyle, 35, artist, Balgreen: "They would be better served just being more courteous to the passengers who are buying their tickets."

Margaret Bruce, 60, catering assistant, Leith: "Lothian Buses obviously need every penny they can get at the moment."

Are there still inspectors on the buses, they used to turn up all over the place and check everyone's tickets. Or bring back conductors, leave driving to the drivers.

It must be a big problem if they are prepared to give cash bonuses.

It is a big problem #4#. If you are really vidulant you can sometimes catch 2 people per day with out of date tickets etc. There is no force #2# to remove the ticket either. Some tickets are used for weeks after they were valid, costing the company alot of money. Most drivers don't bother, but if you can be bothered why not? Whats wrong with a little bonus. Most people that are caught are using the tickets and know they are out of date, you can spot these people by the way they sweep the tickets past you as quickly as possible. By the way, why does the evining news jump on every oppertunity to print something bad about Lothian Buses or try and bring the staff down. Our job is hard enough without an anti bus newspaper winding up the general public of Edinburgh.

Buses do not serve passengers. Why are the passengers required to pay to be delivered to and from the businesses the buses actually serve?

#8 All the people that moan about bus drivers like you wouldn't dream about driving a bus in Edinburgh all day for any amount of money. Give them a break. Whats wrong with a little bonus?

I thought this had been in place for ages. Isn't there a little plague under the ticket machine next to the driver with the rewards printed on it?

yes #12 we have had this scheme for years.

Quite agree No.11. Yesterday evening a large number of bus drivers didn't get to finish their shift on time. It took a bus approximately 2.5 hours to get from town to Bonnyrigg due buses being diverted as that poor old lady got killed by a car in Minto Street.

Passengers were giving the driver verbal abuse because the bus was so late. How they figured it was the drivers fault I've no idea. Brainless idiots. People are very quick to have a go at Lothian Bus Drivers but as you say No.5, your job is hard enough.

#12 - The Judge - "Isn't there a little plague under the ticket machine ..."

If that is the case, I won't be getting on the buses again!

I think this bonus is a good idea, otherwise what incentive is there for bus drivers to do something about forged tickets.

Who are these people that the EEN have commenting at the end of the above article under the heading "Is this a good idea"?! Dimwits it seems, and I bet they never get the bus anyway.
Fare dodgers are stealing from all fare paying passengers, like shoplifting it adds to the cost of goods and services. No, there aren't bus inspectors inspecting tickets like they used to; full time salaries add to Lothian Buses' costs.
It's a great idea giving an incentive to bus drivers, they have a difficult enough job at the best of times; grappling with drunks, junkies and outraged mums!
Mr I Want to be Anonymous on the no. 29, all buses have the little labels!

I agree with the scheme. Why not get a little bonus.

However, the transport manager at Longstone Depot needs shot.

I hae never seen any stickers or plaques on the buses?
18

smallbutperfectlyformed,

#17 They are in the drivers' area, behind their screens, not for the public to view.
Why forewarn the fare-dodgers?!

Stupid pointless stories like this are the reason I don't buy this 'sad rag'! Just noise everyone up on the internet for free.
Who cares if drivers get a reward for out of date tickets? No tram news to bring Lothian buses down yet again. If they get sold off to a private company then you really will have something to moan about!
