DROPPING plans for a tram line between Roseburn and Granton would be a "huge blow" for communities in the north of the city, an MSP said today.
Earlier this week it emerged that the £87 million extension to Edinburgh's tram line looks set to be scrapped amid a mounting cash crisis, despite the city council insisting that no decision has been made.

Malcolm Chisholm, MSP for Edinburgh North and Leith, said the spur, known as line lb, had a large amount of support in his constituency.

He said: "The project has very considerable support in north Edinburgh and has been central to regeneration plans over the past few years.

"Any suggestion of scrapping the Granton spur would be another huge blow to the area. It is vital that the Granton spur is constructed in order to improve journey times for residents in Granton and Pilton, to hasten the economic development of the waterfront and to support climate change objectives."

City council leader Jenny Dawe has insisted that plans for the spur line are not dead, and says a group is currently exploring costs and funding for the project.

Malc Chisholm says there's 'very considerable support in North Edinburgh' -

Most people have never met anyone who thinks the trams are a good idea.

Is Chisholm part of a spin machine?

By supporting this farce Chisholm is showing either that he has not read the business plan or that he does not care about wasting tens of millions of pounds of money on a project with no viable business case.

Either way does not present him in a favourable light.

Chisholm always has been a complete balloon and it is obvious he hasn't changed. Lets just hope he never gets into any position of real influence again.

Chisolm Schizom what a balloon. Where does he get the notion that there is considerable support for the tram line? His mammy maybe said it was a good idea.

As usual oor Malcolm is tuned in to the psyche of his constituents.......not! He retains the title of 'Master of inappropriateness.' Some things never change.

Can the council not just give us a vote on this and that way we KNOW how the people of Edinburgh truly feel about this.

Money is not an issue with regard to this vote. The council are shoveling money into this tram line and will burden us for many years to come.

With a vote we at least know what the public want.

Just remember this clown when the next election comes along. How many voted for him, as opposed to policies? They are the ones we have to thank for this tram LINE. Dump him next term and save Edinburgh Millions is wasted schemes like the trams.

Oh no! it's the Edinburgh Luddite tram whingers again.

The Luddite movement was essentially a group of people who wanted to return to ye olden days of simplistic manufacturing technologies.

Interestingly, this nineteenth century movement took place within about thirty years of the invention of railways, of which the tramway is a subset.

It's a form of surrealism to suggest that a 21st century opposition to an anachronistic, unwanted, badly planned, failing, unmanaged, overpriced, ill-considered and ultimately moribund Edinburgh tram line is Luddism. In fact, it's the opposite of Luddism.

As for whinging, well, I'd suggest that it's a bit more vital than that. It's opposition, and with incontrovertible logic behind it.

Progress is good. Look what it did for Newbridge. You've got an egg factory and a motorway, and a McDonald's. And no trams.

drop one tram line!!!!what's wrong with dropping them all,the maniacal team system has been a disgrace from the start,Edinburgh will forever known as the city that threw away millions of pounds on a transport system when they already had the best one in country,
Edinburgh is the city that is delighted to throw away
tax payers money,
what a pile!!!!!

Maybe he could put his money were his mouth is.

This was a "Labour" Project, its a pity he wasn't so outspoken when the project was in its early stages

things like ...oops we've worked out a Price....but forgot to add Inflation to our bid.

Never mid the lack of management expertise that has left this project lurching from one problem to another - mostly self inflicted.

I wonder how many of his constituents are sick of the tramworks....that have made their lives a misery.... ....with Works that should have been finished months ago!

Never Mind the Bus Drivers who are "sick" of the Holes in Edinburgh Just now.

Getting Jip for buses running late.

Just listen to all you idiots.

More intent on insulting an individual than analysing the facts of the story and coming to a considered conclusion.

It's no wonder nobody of merit ever takes any of your ill thought out rants seriously!!

No15 and welcome to the club, we've posted your gold membership to the moaners club.

"had a large amount of support in his constituency."

how do we know this, I know folk from Leith and they are sick of the Upheaval caused by the tram works

simple things like

the road outside of them is still getting dug up months after it was due for completion
Loss of Water Pressure
Buses delayed or running off route.

even the spur will not go past most of his constituents as it is/was planned to run along the north, near the new developments at the Forth.

Logically they could have run it through the Middle of North Edinburgh, along the Old railway line.

Serving a lot more people, but hey this is about serving the "Granton Riviera", hoping for donations from the developers, but the Begging Tin is rattling.

Maybe if TIE had got their figures right in the first place, then they could have afforded line 1b
17

Uncle Piehead,

23/11/2008 20:23:06
Maybe TIE should keep a journal of this project from its inception right up until it fails.

They could recoup a couple of grand in consultancy fees for other cities seeking a "How Not To Do It" guide.

It's very good of Chisholm to try and talk up the Line B cancellation as a 'huge blow', but let's face it Chizzy, it would be more like a palpable relief than a huge blow. Unless, that is, Chizzie's respondents have been huffing large quantities of blow:

"Trams are like a fractal, dude, see the tram tracks from a helipter man, a helicopter it shines like the way light refracts through a lense man, trams man, peace."

Pffft.
