LABOUR has suspended its East Lothian constituency party amid a row ovr the re-selection of MP Anne Moffat as a candidate.
The party has been at the centre of an ongoing row over the re-selection of the current Westminster MP to fight the next election.
All the internal structures have been closed down and are being run centrally.

"It is normal that the business bein
g transacted by the local party is suspended pending the dispute being resolved," a Scottish Labour spokesman said today.

"The NEC will now work with the local party to resolve matters amicably."

East Lothian is Labour's biggest constituency party in Scotland.

Ms Moffat gained the support of only two of six branches in the constituency in her battle for re-selection, but was endorsed as the candidate as a result of the votes from union affiliates.

The NEC initially endorsed Ms Moffat as the candidate, but subsequent complaints locally have led to the NEC stepping in today and suspending the party.

Ms Moffat was first elected to serve East Lothian in 2001.

She attracted criticism after claiming £40,000 in travel expenses between 2003 and 2004, more than any other MP.

Mr Gray said today: "This is a matter for the constituency Labour Party and the Party at a national level.

"I am pleased that the National Executive committee is seeking to resolve it and I hope that will happen quickly.

"My work as county MSP continues as usual."

But Tory Westminster candidate for East Lothian Michael Veitch branded the development a "huge embarrassment" for Mr Gray.

"The East Lothian Labour Party, which has long been in a state of perpetual crisis, has now finally imploded," he said.

"If even Labour HQ has no faith in the ability of the local Labour party to carry on, and is forced to make this public knowledge, what does that say about their ability to represent the people of East Lothian, who frankly deserve better than this never-ending circus?

"It is also a huge embarrassment for Anne Moffat and indeed Iain Gray, who both have a lot of very difficult questions to answer."

SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson said today it was "humiliating" for Mr Gray.

He said: "Labour has finally confirmed the worst kept secret in Scottish politics. Iain Gray is London Labour's man.

"Since Jim Murphy took over at the Scotland Office Iain Gray will have got used to taking his orders from London – now his constituency party is being run from there too."

Ah so there is to be a reselection process. I seem to remember that when Ms Moffat was first selected as Labour candidate it was all a bit terse and challenged. Her travelling expenses are a joke as were John Home Robertsons before her.......collective snouts in trough

Yep,

Democracy - Labour style!

No doubt, we'll soon have some numptie telling us how much better it is to be seen to be run from London, instead of just getting orders over the net and the phone!

No more skulking around as wannabe English! You can now stand up on your hind legs and tell us that for Labour, London is best!

Pat O'Donnell, comment please!

I cannot imagine that Anne Moffat MP would be at the centre of anything untoward.
BTW, how are the police getting on with their enquiry into the assault and robbery by "scum" (she said) on the Coastal path at Port Seton? No arrests, yet? No witnesses, yet? Strange, eh? It's still the talk o' the toun, especially in the Legion and the Thorntree.

Ah yes, in addition to being among the top-performing trough-guzzlers, this would be the same Anne Moffat who described her constituents as the 'scum of society' back in May when she was (allegedly) mugged on a coastal path near Cockenzie. Ms Moffat alleged she was 'bruised and had injuries to her legs, ribs, head and face', and said she may have been unconscious for up to half an hour. The 'gang'- who might have been called 'The Untouchables'(although nobody else had apparently heard of them), and there was a 'slight chance' they had been 'nasty towards her politically' might just have said 'duff her up'. Or something. Before nicking a necklace, rings and a watch. Oh, and £20. But not her mobile phone. Allegedly. Could Ch Supt Terry Powell, local police commander, give any update on this enquiry? And could he comment on another report that a drunken, middle-aged woman was seen leaving a public-funded function shortly before this incident?

Aye, Moffat is some joke indeed.

I thought her comments after her mugging were shocking. It was under her previous Labour-led Council and under the Labour/Liberal Executive that such "scum" were allowed to flourish. But, as they say, dress a monkey in a red rosette in East Lothian and it will be elected.

Labour has always been run from London.

Iain Gray has effectively been demoted to deputy labour leader in Scotland. Gordon Browns under achieving p(m)uppet, Jim Murphy, is now the Labour leader in Scotland.

The Labour people at Holyrood are not chuffed.

You know, the more I see of Labour letting Scotland down at Londons request, the more I think either the Scottish Lib Dems should move more towards a looser union with england, but not complete independence, or there is a space for a new political force in Scotland, that fights for Scotlands interests, but does not want TOTAL indpendence. As things currently stand, there is pro union (lab lib dems, tories) or full independence (SNP).

Maybe someone will step up to the challenge.

is annie moffat trying to emulate roald dahl with her nonsensical tale of the big bad boys from annies fantasyland who allegedly mugged her, seriously the only ones that have been and will continue to be mugged are the poor chumps this clown pretends to care about and represent,
