COUNCILLORS have agreed to put the £25 million revamp of Meadowbank Stadium on ice.
The council had expected to bring in around £17 million through selling a third of the Meadowbank site for housing after bulldozing the existing stadium and velodrome.

However, as the Evening News revealed last week, the development has now had to be shelved

The council may need to plough in £11.9m – almost half the cost of a new stadium – to keep it in use in the meantime.

Cllr Iain Whyte, leader of the city's Conservative group, told yesterday's meeting: "This needs more than just a lick of paint."

Nothing will happen at Meadowbank for years. It will now go into a terminal decline.

The previous plan for Sighthill could have worked but they turned it into a political football.

Too many "save Meadowbank" bandwagon jumpers and what's the result ?

Sport in Edinburgh loses out - again !

If they have "agreed to put the £25 million revamp of Meadowbank Stadium on ice" then let's get an ice hockey team going. Come on, Edinburgh - we can do this!

way to late for that it happened years ago, before they thought of replacing it.

It would be £11.9 million well spent. Meadowbank is an architectural gem. It is also of historical importance. Does anyone remember the great Greame Obree who started out on this very velodrome before smashing world records around the globe. He couldn't come back because of the state it is in. Get it fixed and encourage new champions like the Flying Scotsman.
