LABOUR councillor Ewan Aitken today warned that residents will be left without access to public transport if the route of a bus service in his ward is reduced.
Lothian Buses' number 12 service is due to be withdrawn between King's Road and Pirniefield as part of a series of cutbacks by the bus firm.

There is no other bus service on most of that section, and Fillyside and Seafield residents would be the most affected as a result of the move.

Cllr Aitken is to lodge a motion at next week's full council meeting. He said there was "grave concern and anger" among residents in Craigentinny.

Everyone should just use their cars then.

It's called "supply and demand" - if there is no or little demand for a bus service in the Fillyside area then Lothian won't run it.

I can remember, back in the early 90s, when the old LRT King's Road to Gorebridge service (89) was withdrawn from Seafield due to low passenger numbers. It was reinstated due to passenger complaints, but was then withdrawn from the area again a few years later and routed to serve Granton instead.

If there was no demand for the 89 through Seafield back then, then the same rings true today with the 12. Lothian Buses is a business, not a charity, and the hard fact is that buses carrying fresh air don't make money.

And if these people complaining about the 12 being cut had actually used it, then they wouldn't have this problem in the first place!

Keep the number 12.

It's part of an excellent overall bus provision in the city that justifies increased motoring taxes and parking charges.

How about making the 12 go beyond seafield to Asda and Fort Kinarrd. all the people that have to shop there should get more passengers

Are you not the same Councillor who was in favour of trams.

With Lothian Buses losing millions due to the TRAMWORKS and various other roadworks that were in the pipeline from the Labour Administration.

aint this a bit of the "Pot calling the kettle black"

#5 The proposed cutbacks are due to a number of reasons - of which roadworks are just one. Lothian Buses have always been in favour of the tram system and they are probably more qualified than most of the part-time transport planners on here

No 6 David

we all know that LB are in favour of the Tramline.

They made a statement in an EN article, blaming the Tramworks for some of the cuts

along with roadworks, increased Fuel prices, Funding for the Scottish Concessionary bus ticket and dropping passenger numbers

READ my comment - it was to do with Cllr Aitken complaining about the cuts, many caused by his previous Labour adminitration various project.

David (6) - As I recall from reading Lothian Buses' evidence to the Parliamentary Committees, it was never asked its opinion of the tram scheme and I would be interested to know where there is a record of Lothian Buses expressing support.

Of course LB are in favour of the tram thats because the man in charge Neil Renilson controls the team that run LB they are all his men and he cant afford to buy a train set like his mentor Brian Stagecoach so he will have to make do with a tram

Sods Law,

Why not just reduce the frequency of services instead of having five numbers 22 buses running together for example. If the 12 is a 15 minute service reduce it to 30 minutes along with other services

Today's Vote

Is it right for the council to scrap the proposed Granton spur for the trams?
Yes, in this economic climate the city can’t afford it
No, we need a tram network, not just a single line
Why stop there? Scrap the whole project
