Published Date: 21 August 2008
What is it? A session with Gary Skinner , who is nominated for Scottish Hairdresser of the Year, at the British Hairdressing awards 2008.
Where? Hair by JFK on 8 South Clerk Street (0131-662 1555). A cut and blow dry costs £40.

What happens? There's got to be something different in the skill level to be up for Scottish hairdresser of the year – and
to be the only Edinburgh salon in the running . . . not just for one but three awards.

Our tester went for a cut and blow dry, and was greeted by Gary who sat down and analysed her hair. After discussion of her likes and dislikes, he advised the best look for her features and lifestyle. The cut took around 20 minutes, then a professional blow dry, followed by more dry cutting.

Was it worth it? "Gary was lovely," says our tester. "He was very friendly and clearly competent.

"His skill and experience even at consultation stage put me at ease.

"All too often salons now just rush you off to be washed before the stylist has even met you. Gary looked at my hair dry and got to know it.

"He was very thorough, very precise and I loved what he did – giving me more texture and more defined edges. The result was great.

"The salon itself is very sleek and the pictures in it are all of their own work – which is amazing.

"It's easy to see why they're nominated for three British hairdressing awards, and I can't believe how reasonably priced they are. Very, very refreshing. I think they might just win."
