HEARTS midfielder Michael Stewart has been called into George Burley's Scotland squad to help the national coach offset the effect of five withdrawals ahead of Wednesday's friendly with Northern Ireland.
Stewart has been enlisted alongside Rangers' David Weir and Graham Alexander of Burnley. It's the midfielder's first international recognition since 2002, when he played in Scotland's 2-0 defeat by South Africa in Hong Kong. To date he has three full caps.
Celtic's Paul Hartley and Gary Caldwell, Gavin Rae and Kevin McNaughton of Cardiff City and Preston's Callum Davidson have all been forced to pull out of Wednesday's match, leaving Burley's squad once again decimated by withdrawals.
Scotland are expected to add more players to the group in order to strengthen their resources for the final friendly before the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign begins next month.
