Published Date: 20 August 2008
HEARTS manager Csaba Laszlo today urged Christophe Berra and Michael Stewart to seize the moment with Scotland this evening after the Edinburgh club reiterated that their captain will not be sold.
Another inquiry from Wolverhampton Wanderers regarding Berra's availability has been rebuffed by Hearts who want the defender to remain a cornerstone of the side. Wolves previously had offers of £1million and £1.5m rejected and a fresh inquiry has se
en Hearts reaffirm their stance.

"They're not selling him," said Mick McCarthy, the Wolves manager. "They want to build a team around him. It's like someone ringing us up about Michael Kightly – he's not for sale. Someone might say, 'we'll come back', and we'd say, 'no, naff off'."

Berra and Stewart are currently on Scotland duty for this evening's friendly with Northern Ireland and Laszlo believes two of his most influential players can take the chance to establish themselves at international level.

To date, Berra has one full cap and Stewart three, the last of the midfielder's appearances being back in 2002 on a post-season tour of the Far East.

"Berra is the captain and is a leader for us, but Michael is also a leader in the midfield," said Laszlo. "Berra is growing into his role as captain and he can have a big future with Hearts and also Scotland. He is young but he is hungry and these are the players we want.

"I think he is ready to be with Scotland for many years and this is an important chance for him to take a place in the team tonight.

"Michael is back with Scotland after many years but it is the same situation. If he plays, he must play the same way as he does for Hearts and there will be no problem. Both guys are vital to us and I think they could be important to their country in the future."

Laszlo is anticipating several injured first-team players returning to training over the coming days, including striker Mike Tullberg and winger Mirsad Beslija. Gary Glen may also come into consideration for this weekend's visit of St Mirren to Tynecastle.

"Glen is back and I know that he is a young and promising player. Everybody has a chance to play but it's important to take steps forward slowly and have the team together. Gary is back with the squad and everything is possible.

"Robbie Neilson is beginning to train with the ball, which is very positive, but I would say that he needs a little bit time."

Meanwhile, Hearts have announced the departure of Alex Koslovski with immediate effect. The Russian had been employed in a consultancy role and helped negotiate players' contracts but has now severed ties with the club.

Hearts need to add players of quality rather than loose them.

I don't know how Berra feels about staying, while he is happy and confident then keep him for as long as possible.

Johnny Jambo,

The problem I see is that if Berra wants to leave then he may not be the right man at Hearts. However and hopefully this scenario is the case, If he is happy with Hearts then great we need to build on all this as it will motivate the rest of the squad to see that we are not a selling club, although I think we still will be if the prices is right, for the right reasons though.

No Will(#5) definition of 'real losers' a bit closer to home for you!

Stewart looks fitter/more focused than ever before. No doubt what so ever if he combines this with his undoubted talent(& remembers it is a team game) that he is as good as any midfielder playing in Scotland.

RE BERRA: delighted; along with Zali had Boyd & Velicka in their pockets on saturday(Boyd resorting to foul play/aided & abeted by the ref to gain an advantage).
BTW No. 28 has now returned to Kanuas!!!

Football, like any other career in life, is about getting the best package for yourself that you can. You look at the pay and the terms of your contract and decide if it is what you want. Maybe you want a new challenge! This situation is no differant to any other in football and it is as simple as that. Few people are loyal to an employer for life and the same applies to football.
14

Dave Mc,

Edinburgh 20/08/2008 12:39:15
I had never been Berra's biggest fan, especially feeling he lacked the leadership skills to be captain, however I was very impressed with him at Ibrox on Saturday. He appeared a lot more vocal than he has done in previous seasons and really tried to drive the team on while organising his relatively inexperienced defensive colleagues fairly well. I suspect this has something to do with Csaba's influence so long may it continue. As for Stewart I'd say the same, if we can find a regular CM partner for him to share the workload with I can see him going from strength to strength for us, although he still needs to control his temper which is still very suspect
15

Dave Mc,

I'm not a huge fan of Berra so wont comment on him. But I'm not surprised at all to see Stewart back in the Scotland set up. He always had the talent, but had an attitude to match. I liked him at Hibs (playing wise anyway) but he tended to go missing in games when things were not going well. Lets hope (for Scotland, not you guys ; ) that he has now done his growing up and can start showing of his ability at International level again.

Neither of these guys should be even included in the squad, they are both not of intl quality, mind you neither is half of Burleys squad, i dread to think whats going on tonight as I think we have a new Berti Vogts period coming, and after all that hard work.
I mean a Falkirk defender and some English noboby and O Connor (like him or not) has been on good form and playing at Brum regular (saw him play the other night and was excellant) not even in the squad....really . Hutton is the biggest loss through Injury though, good player....3-0 N.Ireland tonight as much as I hate typing it, i fear the worst

Who?,

20/08/2008 14:56:41
#40- bit wrong about scotland going through a new BV period- that would have happened if McLeish had stayed in charge.

Under McLeish scotland suffered their worst, most emabrrassing international result of all time: 2-0 away to georgia. The georgians gave a debut to a 17 year old goalkeeper, a 16 year old centre back and a 16 year old midfielder- all of whom had never previously played an international game in their lives!

Lets not forget that Northern Ireland beat georgia 4-0 or 4-1 in a friendly 4-6 months ago!

Burley has to reduce the age of the squad, blood young players while still keeping up a level of performance and result. There is no point judging people on tonights type of game, its competitive fixtures by which he will stand or fall.

In each squad burley has had to endure quite a few players calling off "injured" when they were fine to play. Everybody knows who these players are, if these players want to treat the scotland jersey and the teams fans like that then fine- but they can't complain when another player seizes their chance.

Watch out Basketball Barry

46

Johnny Jambo,

20/08/2008 15:31:04
The result is not important tonight, at all, although I hope we win. What is important is that the Manager gets to see his players and be in a position to slect the best squad he can for going away next month for the two opening games in the group. Now we know that some of the players in the squad for tonight are not really what we wpould class as first choice, but what choice does Burly have, should he cancel the game because he doesnt have his full squad or should he use the opportunity to his advantage and blood some other potential future players.
I know what I would rather he do.
47

Rolland,

20/08/2008 15:33:52
Well said JJ, this the national team "pre season" friendly if you like the chance to try out different partnerships, for example handbaw baz will miss the next 2 scotland games so someone has to fill in, why not Stewart ?
48

Johnny Jambo,

20/08/2008 15:37:44
Hi Rolland - I just think that rather than criticise the players, although not all are doing that, we should get behind George Burley and support the team after all he has lost half a team to injury, whether they are real injuries or not doesnt matter and is another argument, Burley needs to get them playing as a team in a short space of time and we need to get off to a flyer in the group stages next month if we stand a chance of qualifying.
At the end of the day these guyswill not be wearing Hearts, Hibs Rangers or Celtic strips tonight they will be wearing the blue of Scotland and we should all put our prejudices aside for the time being.

I dont really understand Scots having no interest in Scotlands Football Team. I am a proud Scot, so want them to do well in any sport, from Cycling (well done the Jambo) to Football. Bit gutted Im missing the game tonight actually.

Yes, I go to the Scotland games with a mixture of Hibee's, Jambo's & Old Firm Fans. To me the days out are a bit like a Hibs Cup Semi or Finals, but with more mates, not just the Hibs fans. your not a top pundit. your a top fuckwit. You seem to think every one of your opinions is fact. Unfortunately, you don't really know very much but keep posting on every story. It's hilarious.

Given the WC qualifiers are not far away I would have preferred to see another centre half get his shot rather than Weir being recalled,

As good a servant he has been for Scotland it is time for him to take a back seat to the the younger lads who may be able to contribute to us getting to SA.

Wilkie was in the Scotland mix before his horrendous injury problems he is now again finding his form.

Berra I would like to see start tonight as the experience would be great for him, Reynolds is another who should be given a look.

It is nice to see the managers of Scotland having some decent options.

Stick to trying to beat ICT, mate.

Pundit. if you were a real pundit, you would know that wilkie is dross compared to berra. are you saying you know better than all the managers in britain who have no interest in signing him? we're knocking back 1.5m bids for berra, how much do you think it would take to sign wilkie in your honest opinion?

Now, how do I get coffee off my keyboard.....??

I don`t think Burley will play Berra as he has recalled "ould boy Weir",maybe that is the way to look forward to World Cup Qualifiers. If Weir gets nod instead of a younger player then I don`t hold out much hope of scotland in qualifying.Anyway,I should hope he does play Weir as we could then cause a wee upset at Hampden(where Scotland are hardly formidable in friendlies!)
C`mon Norn Iron!

STOP IT.......YOU'RE KILLING ME!!!!!

United sold their star asset, Hunt, for £500k. Anyone could pick up Wilkie for £400k/£500k max.

The weegie mobs would offer £250k.

Smithy 1874,

pundit. utd just sold their best player, hunt, for 600k so id imagine wilkies more in the region of 150-200k and thats being kind. also if you pay 2m for reynolds i will eat my season ticket! (a) hes not that good or as rangers like to describe signings, unheard of and (b) rangers dont usually offer spl teams more than 200k for their best players

Gungareesh,

Was Hunt £600k? Okay, but £1mill for Wilkie......he wasn't worth much before his injury and there is no way a club would risk it now.

I seem to remember the Gers paying more than 200k for Whittaker and Thomson from the Hibs, Boyd and Naismith from Killie were also a lot more than 200k

Agree with you Smithy #112, again just my opinion, Scotland need to look at other options and that is what he is doing this evening. Also a bit miffed as to the Weir one again would have preferred a youngester in there.

Evening dailyman, you'd know better than me, i dont really pay much attention to other teams to be honest, i was just implying that years ago, and in some cases these days, teams didnt have to pay much to sign players within the spl because the other clubs cant refuse the money.
I think reading got a great deal for hunt, imo if he'd been at a club that are not in a position where they need to sell, he would have sold for a considerable amount more.
Well guys off out for my tea, might pop on later!

Rolland, i to am shocked that grandad is getting a game over berra. think berra and mcmanus could be a good combination
105

Rolland,

20/08/2008 17:48:29
McManus is still prone to silly errors imo, he allows the attacker at least one great chance a game either by being caught out of position or a mistake. He should be learning from them and cutting them out now.
Just from what I have seen.

DAILYMAN # 98: question was a bit ambigious(also aimed at the simpleton Puntit) meant the team but your answer is better in any case.
Robert scott from Whitburn was the answer to the Big Jock question.... puntit knew the answer but did decided he wasn'yt playing.(either that or google let him down)

However i am persistant....puntit: who has won the late 60's STV quizball more times Celtic or Rangers?

BTW: you can google the answer(aplogies to the under 45's who have not a got a clue what i am on about)

United were a bit under the cosh as the player was free to sign with clubs after Jan 1st.

So I suppose the fee United got was fairly reasonable.
