Mole believes attack-driven Hearts can win UEFA spot

HEARTS striker Jamie Mole believes Csaba Laszlo's style of fluent attacking football is destined to take the club back into Europe this season.
The Hungarian manager watched Mole score a stunning opening goal from 25 yards in Saturday's 2-1 defeat of St Mirren, a victory notable for the hosts' relentless attacking and sound ball retention.

Hearts' play has impressed during the opening three SPL matches with Laszlo having imparted his wish for a controlled game plan centring around crisp and purposeful passing.

Mole stressed today that such an approach is certain to ensure European football returns to Tynecastle next year. Although fourth place would be sufficient to guarantee a UEFA Cup second-round qualifying slot, he expects Hearts to aim even higher.

"We need to keep on believing. If we do, we can get the third spot," said the Englishman. "The style of football that the manager wants to play will see us beat most teams. It's down to us, the strikers, to score goals and, if the midfield chip in as Michael Stewart has done, then we'll be difficult to stop.

"If we keep on playing the way we're playing we'll be up there. I think we've shown we will play good football this season. Even against Rangers that didn't change and I thought we were unlucky in that game.

"On Saturday our game was tidy with lots of good passing. That's what the manager wants and it's working."

Stewart scored the decisive second goal against St Mirren before missing a late penalty, an aberration for which Laszlo happily shouldered the blame.

"We had two penalties and I always write two or three people to shoot penalties," he smiled. "I wrote Michael Stewart and Larry Kingston. Kingston was not in the game (he had been substituted], but it was my mistake as I meant to write David Obua.

"David is a fantastic penalty shooter and free-kick shooter. Next time I will write three names and we have more opportunities."

Obua, who looked convincing on his Hearts debut, saw the funny side when asked about the incident. "I wanted to take the last one but we have to follow protocol," he said. "The coach said Michael was to take the penalties. I was going to take it but the gaffer said Stewart was to take it. Next time, I promise I'll take it."

What might put Mole back in his hole (and the rest of the team with him) is if Vlad sticks his nose in again. He·s already done so this season at least once.

Appears the extreme critisism of VR for taking a prolonged period to appoint a manager may be misplaced. Eight weeks into his reign & i am genuinally pleased we did not get McGhee.

Still a fair bit to go(need to score goals when dominating)but so far so good.

We're all having a shotty in goal and now shottys at the pens. Make it easy then lads its "Makers Takers".
A decent enough performance on Saturday but what it did show was that we are still vulnerable. Until we shake that and kill off sides we are hampering progress.
Nice left foot on Obua, pity there is no right but what do you get for free these days?
7/10 for me, the finishing was awful and for once it was the opposition who must have felt hard done by with the ref. Harsh red I thought but if anything made it harder for us.
Could understand frustration of some of the crowd but for me Hearts played the right way until the frantic last 20 when we became frenzied and not so organised.
Keeper looks a bombscare to me, next in line on Weds I suspect is Csabas fave.

The football was great to watch on saturday and there is definitely a flair team back in the capital. It was the most one-sided 2-1 win i've seen in a while. That aside we need to be ruthless in front of goal as the finishing was woeful at times. Encouraging signs already though

Obua looks like a great adition and from what i have seen he will find the SPL little problem.

For me however i think the biggest plus is the re-emegence of michael Stewart who if he can keep his form up will be every bit as good a midfielder as anyone in the country. I have always kept faith in him as despite his issues he has talent in abundance.

Nade looked as unfit as ever but mole looked pretty dangerous... not going to be a 20+ goal a season striker though I fear and from what we see of Tullberg's stats neither is he. I thought we were to favour a 4-4-2 this year and this would bring Glen into the fold however we seem to have scrapped this idea and are going for a lone target man running the line, at least we seem to have better quality there to provide for such a system now... We will not be prlific goalscorers though in this system.

Just an afterthought just now as the team is playing well but... Why are we playing Karapidis in midfield when we have Ruben and Jonsson and i think bruno in there who are natural to that postion?

10

victorian of gorgie ,

hopefully that's just the start. if we get a good striker in tullberg and cut out the daft mistakes at the back, hearts could have an excellent season.

#9 Karipidas allowed Stewart/Kingston/Driver/Obua to press forward/support Mole.Personally i thought he was excellent on SATURDAY.....not sure if it was because he had more time(as ST M a man short). A fan of Palaz but in a 4-5-1 need someone to hold(Jonson could do but i still fancy seeing him at right back)
12

Who?,

25/08/2008 12:39:42
Good result and a good 3 points, still a long way to go but we are heading in the right direction.

All that saturday showed was how hearts really need a goalscorer. If its to be Glen then play him against 3/4 of the spl from the start, for the more difficult games revert to 4-5-1. If its not to be Glen then get him out on loan so he can get use to playing first team football in a competitive environment.

The problem is that after sunday hearts can't sign or anymore players- surley there must be a goalscorer out there somewhere?

What happened to the rumours of ratboy joining the club?
13

Edinburgh's Big Team,

EH11 25/08/2008 12:42:09
I think Csaba favours 4-4-2 but we just dont have the players to play it yet. When Glen, Tullberg and Nade are all fully fit it will be interesting.

Chas - usually agree with your posts but not sure what the keeper did to look a bombscare? he might be but didn't think he showed any signs on sat - was it just the shirt hanging out that put you off?

14

The Wookie,

12#...."Ratboy" has been offered terms - but as usual the player is holding out too see who comes along at the last minute - Vlad has told him he has until Friday to decide..

There is absolutly no chance in him going to Easter Road - Mixu would have to unload about 50 players to afford him!!!
15

UrbanFox,

25/08/2008 12:46:18
Yes, you can see the potential opening up. Spending £2-3m now on a proven goal-scorer would be a good investment which would pay for itself through a return to Europe.

Grasping at straws...not like a hobo is it?

This would be the same poor St Mirren team that Celtic only beat because of a cheating referree who gave them a penalty that never was.

Try engaging brain before typing...muppet.

Anyway onto Hearts, played some really good football on Saturday some of the best thats been played in a very long time, as each weeh goes by Csaba's influence and how he wants us playing is becoming more evident. Gone is the hoofball punt up the park, and its being replaced by some really good passing and possession football. Even the Goalkeeper Kello was reluctant to punt the ball up the park but instead was distributing the ball really well, and on the odd occasion he did kick upfield his passing was good. Can't comment too much on Kello as he was never really tested, he had no chance for the goal, but what i can say is for once we have a keeper there who is not afraid to command his box, and did so with confidence. Obua has skill although i think it will take a few games for him to adjust properly to the game here, his passing was good and his first touch really good, definately prefer him in midfield though, he looked shaky at left back when he was moved to that position. Maybe this week Tullberg will be ready and we will get a chance to see him in action. The rest of the team Stewart great game some of his passing was top drawer stuff, you wouldnt think it was the same player as last year. Berra and zali were good as well don't think Zali lost an aeriel challenge all day. A negative would be Kingston, thats 3 games now and he hasn't been effective at all really, hopefully its just a temporary hitch and he will come good again.

Overall very satisfying performance but a much improved team, however the same old comment comes to mind, we need a striker, had a prolific striker been playing saturday it would have been a rout.

I agree that Karapidis looked decent there on saturday but i just find it a little strange that we are playing a centre back there when we have so many defensive midfielders at the club.

Perhaps he is being showcased though for his reported iminent move back to Greece... As i said though since we are winning it is more of an afterthought.

I hope there is not a storm brewing over the keeper situation too but until the wind picks up i will not cause undue worry.

I wouldn't call it fluent attacking football. Granted we did knock the ball around but this was generally done in front of St Mirren with very little penetration through their defence. We have no cutting edge up front and seriously require a couple of decent forwards. I'd also like to see Karapidis slot in next to Berra at the back and Jonsson brought back into the holding midfield role.

Several times he got caught in no mans land, started to come then stopped, though it never cost us on Sat. I think he could in time. Csaba summed it up when he said he was not so confident.

Intrigued with the Karipidis one. Is Csaba simply being clever holding on to him due to lack of cover at the back, knowing he could easily have been sold. Will things change after next Monday, believe the transfer window is open 1 more day since 31st is a Sunday and the shoppys shut.

It's all been said before and we know where we stand, however Hibs finishing above Hearts?... if history has taught us one thing it is that this never happens two seasonhs in a row and in fact very rarely at all.

As for Big Ken... Seriously mate if we aree such a small team and so little a threat then how come you are on here talking about us when in the time Vlad has been here you have won only one more trophy than we have (a Disney Cup at that) and have been unable to do anything other than emulate our highest placed finish of second place?

If we are a small team then hey that is not a bad record when held up against the giant Glasgow rangers' achievments.

4 in a row to follow and this will continue until someone at the club finaly wakes up and realises that Bazza is not bigger than the club and tells him to tow the line... Funny how so many of PLG's 'duds' seem to actually be good players now that they have left Rangers, but never mind just you keep telling yourself that it is everyone else who is poor and that Barry is a world class player.

There we go again... NO Hearts are not as big and as you well know (I hope, or you really are a cretin) nobody is trying to claim that.

Rangers did indeed bore their way to a final horsing down in Manchester, this is true but they then proceded to embarrass the entire country with their fans behaviour, players performances and manager's ineptness only to return back to Scotland with still only a Disney Cup more than Hearts have amassed in the three years Vlad has been at hearts.

Rangers are in a right state and are looking ominously down the barrel of 4 in a row... perhaps you should be on a rangers thread discussing this with your equally deluded mates rather than contenting yourself with the fact that you are a bigger club than hearts... just a suggestion like, suit yourself though... As for good players... We had two guys in the Scotland set up, Larry playing along side Essien and co (and not looking out of place either... Set up their winner infact), Driver, Obua and a new signing from Reggina to add to our talented youngsters.

You lot are reduced to crowing about former players and the likes of Kerr, O'Brian and Nish... seriously even our flops have a 2.5 mil price tag, how much do you expect to recoup when that lot move on?

Celtic have strengthened and their settled team look to have a bit more strength in depth... Rangers have an aging team of average players and any shining lights like Hutton and Gums are sold before you have time to build a team around them.

Rangers may be able to concentrate on the league now yes but they don't look to be much better than the teams below them in all seriousness and so this mess looks set to continue for the time being... Take solace however in the fact that there is no way Wattie will be allowed to carry on to 5 in a row and the prospect of this is bound to spurr moonbeams into action and get his finger out in finding a buyer for the club.

Bednar went for 2.5 after a dreadfull season at hearts and this is the same price tag currently sitting on Goncalves' head... As for fletcher, methinks he better start hitting the net again soon or his price tag looks set to fall.

The last figure I heard touted around for fletcher to go to the Real reserves (Not a dig but this is where he is reported to headed as their reserves play in the lower leagues in Spain and a few of the successfull youngsters sometimes earn a call up to the first squad.) was 2mil... Less than what it will take to sign Gonzo and half a mil less than we got for Bednar.

Your team is full of hammer throwers, lithuanian journeymen and lazy africans. You will be bottom half this year. Your average crowd at home is 9000 odd.

Where is this 'maroon toon' anyway? There is no maroon toon in scotland, unless you count bonnyrigg, lasswade, or some other midlothian sheethole where you locals still point at aeroplanes.

Did you only join the whole predictor this morning or do you not carry your points into a mini league if you join one after having already joined the main predictor?

We used to do our own one at a previous workplace and all us 'expert' pundits got cuffed by a lassie who didn't even like football because she didn't let her heart rule her head... I won the Euro 2000 mini one though and had great fun drinking their money!

#65 Lithanian journeymen?! The only journeyman (i.e. someone who is getting on a bit and played all over the place) is wee Audrey. Zaliukas is a young player as are Miko and Cesnauskis. That is also the sum total of our Liths just now and neither of the last two are starting. Full of lazy african's? Larry and ...... ??? Other than that, you've got Wallace, Thomson, Driver, Berra and Mole who all came through the academy and Stewart in there as well. Chuck in Neilson, Glen and Mcdonald and you've got the majority of a squad that actually came through our youth set up. How's your youth set up doing these days?
Average home crowd of 9000?! Average is actully 13,788 for our first two home games. Over the last 3 season's our average will be no less than that and most likly up nearer 15,000 but why not just make things up to suit yourself!!

My mate set up one online last season on his website. We also decided that there was more chance picking the winning lotto numbers than guessing the hearts starting 11 and set up a pot for that too(needless to say was won only 3 times!) we put in a pound for each, you won the pot for guessing the team predictor and a cash prize for 1st 2nd and 3rd in the match predictor. I won third but it only paid off the money i was due for playing lol! Must admit that it made the games a lot more interesting and created a lot of banter, some friendly and some not! He also done a euro predictor in the summer(which i came a close 2nd only cos i forgot to play the semis, d'oh!)

Average game on Saturday in terms of excitement. 10 man, poor St Mirren team nearly snatched a draw with last minute header.
Karapidis not good enough. Thomson good second half but we need better. Kingston not at best. Chesny looked good when he came on. Driver wasted on right side in first half. Obua quite good need to see more, not sure at left back. We have more left sided players than any other team! Box to box midfielder and a quality 15+ forward are minimum needs followed by a righr back.
Hopefully see a few new starts tomorrow and see if anyone can push their way into first team starting line up.

i've joined but am not really good with predictions. Prefer the fantasy football myself. We had 98 in our league last season £10 a head to enter and a 7 year old won it!

what a chancer,

new driver 25/08/2008 16:46:17
i think larry could be off to the championship as his perfomance since his play has been in bit parts, its quite obvious he is only waiting for the offer to come but it may be a poor one ,the pay scale he has may hamper him from departing us.
88

huggs,

25/08/2008 16:46:33
Back to Hearts again
Obua looks good judging his first game would like to see him up front though
Nade still looking fat not sure if we will ever get him fit Zali and Berra solid at the back and Stewart and Moles work rate terrific so things looking good

Another striker required please

larry isnt money for value we have seen this type of person before, admit it we cant aford these guys never mind a person doing a two third shift, they can cost us games as they take up a willing players space on the pitch.

what a chancer,

still think we could do with an expierienced centre half whos been through it all and a midfielder as well to assist stewart.should not cost the earth just some one who can do a half hour of quality and take the responsibility when required.

How quickly people forget seriously... Okay larry has had a couple of bad games but there was a point last season where out of 11 men he was the only one trying a fig.

If we can allow wasters like Ivaskevicius to do nowt for years and still get a game then I for one will allow Larry a bit of slack since when he is on his game he is usually the best player on the park.

He may not be on top form just now but at one popint he wqas looking like the only way we were going to score until glen started getting games.

Where does this kind of thing come from as it r4eally gets up my nose when people start this sort of nonsence.

As for going to the Championship, i think he is good enough to get a game for any team down South outside the top 4 or 5.

97

Talk o' the Toun,

#128 JAMBOY Agree other than disagree he has had two bad games.... two average games by his standard. With Larry, Obua & Mikey stewart playing behind a decent front two and in front of a quality holding role plater(Brellier like) we will be entertained a score goals.
98

what a chancer,

new driver 25/08/2008 17:21:32
i expect a resonable game from all persons in the squad that are fit ,but i expect a little more from larry as he is supposed to be above the rest i am wondering if he has peaked and sitting back now ,i for one wouldlove the guy to turn it around and play with hearts till his contract expires but we cant afford bit performances on the pitch as it costs us points.we need a full team playing ninety minutes plus.

Bad games by his standard then, agreed.

There was a point last season and at the tail end of the one before where he was running around doing everyone else's jobs for them because they were not putting the effort in.

Anyone who thinks we are a better team without kingston either has not seen him very much or must be mental. reminds me of the guy i used to sit behind who would leave early and moan his t1ts off about Hartley being rubbish when Levein signed him.
