Published Date: 15 August 2008
OUT-OF-FAVOUR Hibs striker Clayton Donaldson was today poised to make his Easter Road exit after agreeing a deal with English League One outfit Crewe Alexandra.
A six-figure sum has been agreed for the 24-year-old's transfer which, it is understood, will finally be completed early next week after Donaldson agreed personal terms.

Donaldson arrived in Edinburgh as a free agent barely 12 months ago, ending a lengthy pursuit by former Hibs boss John Collins as he penned a three-year deal as he moved from York City.

While he initially enjoyed a measure of success, five of his six goals in a green and white shirt coming in a three-match run which included a hat-trick against Kilmarnock, Donaldson fell out of the picture after Mixu Paatelainen succeeded Collins in the Easter Road hot seat.

Thereafter Donaldson made only fleeting appearances, resulting in Paatelainen revealing he'd told the former Hull City, Harrogate, Scarborough and Halifax player he was free to find another club.

Crewe boss Steve Holland, having sold Nicky Maynard to Bristol City for £2 million, has been on Donaldson's trail for some time as have other English clubs but now the striker has settled on a move to Gresty Road.

Donaldson will be joined in heading for the exit door by Moroccan hitman Abdessalam Benjelloun who has agreed to join Belgian club Royal Charleroi on loan until January having also found himself falling down the pecking order.

However, contrary to other reports, Benji's move has not yet gone ahead as he requires a visa from Morocco before he can make the switch.

Paperwork also continues to threaten the hopes of Hibs fans seeing Paatelainen's latest signing, French ace Steve Pinau, making his debut in tomorrow's SPL match against Falkirk.

As the Evening News revealed yesterday, Hibs still haven't received international clearance for the 20-year-old who has joined on a season-long loan deal from Italian Serie A side Genoa.

The SFA are pursuing the issue with both the French and Italian football authorities, Pinau having moved from Monaco to Genoa only this summer but, increasingly, it looks unlikely Paatelainen will have the youngster at his disposal tomorrow.

That being the case, the burden of scoring the goals which have all but eluded Hibs thus far will again fall on Scotland striker Steven Fletcher and Colin Nish with Paatelainen imploring his hitmen to take any chances which fall their way tomorrow something the pair failed to do on the opening day of the season against Kilmarnock.

He said: "I was happy with our performance at Rugby Park, but we need goals. I'm looking for a similar display but with goals, simple as that.

"If we hit form we have every chance, we must be willing to defend and attack in the proper manner."

- A six-figure sum - frightening..

still Mixu is right - we just need to score goals and defend willingly and i can see us comfortably getting the 3 points.

I mean, in falkirk they eat their own babies.. lets get in clean about them..

mon the hibs

We never saw the best of Donaldson, I've no doubt he will score goals at Crewe.

but why has Benji fallen down the order ??? He is clearly better than Nish if not Fletcher himself. Still no answer to this one

I'm afraid he flattered to deceive.

Looked like he had something and was quick, but unfortunately he had a clumsy first touch and was easily moved off the ball.

Best all round for him to move on. Saves us a salary and brings in a transfer fee. I wonder if this money goes into some pot for Mixu to spend, or straight in the bank.

Hmmm

Quite possibly. His obvious problem though, is his lack of presence. He always appeared far too lightweight for the league. At the age of 24, I'd doubt that he'll be able to change that.

If only we could have got rid of Brian Kerr instead.

Not sure Clayton was ever given a real chance under Mixu.

Good luck CD #8

The language that this guy David Hardie uses always makes me laugh. If he is not calling poor players stars he is using words tht don't fit the situation. I have this image now of a tearful Mixu on his knees in praying position in front of a distainful Nish and Fletcher 'imploring' them to score tomorrow.

No.3 is a wind-up merchant who appears of many stories, not all football. You can respond with the same comment when Elliot finally get some team to take him.

I have to say I'm not impressed with the treatment of Benji. To go from scoring twice in a cup final to being farmed out on loan with no pre season appearances at all is very shabby. Especially at a time when we cant buy a goal. Glad to see Donaldson go though - another quality Collin's signing!

Re: Benji

I know a Hibs player who told me Benji's head hasn't been in it for quite some time including a lack of effort in training, etc. The guy's head got too big and he showed a real lack of maturity and professionalism IMHO. Pity though, because he was a great player for Hibs and could bang the goals in. I hope he gets a little reality check at Charloi.

Lets hope Pinau settles in well. If you're reading this Steven, you're welcome round to mine for a spot of lunch followed by a tour of 'Burgh (excluding enemy territory ya Gorgie bams!)

Probably the worst player ever to pull on a hibs jersey which doesnt say much really considering we have a lot of clowns there at the moment. Was he even a football player before he came to easter road? I think maybe not. Can Nish not go with him? Please Crewe, please. 2 duds for the price of 1.

How can people say Clayton was one of the worst players to pull on a hibs shirt? I remember his first goal, pure class, skinned 2 players and finished beautifuly. he had some week moments, not enough to say he was the worst. He scored 5 goals in 6 games, ok 2 or 3 penalties, but still, he was dangerous. He was banging them in for the reserves and I would say he is a bigger threat than Nish is. IIRC he played about 20 minutes in the last game of the season and looked like the only one who might score.

Ah well... at least we get a 'six-figure sum', which no doubt we will re-invest in the team...

#50. I suspect the what you have written is not quite what you meant to say.

But if you are criticising Hearts fans for commenting on hibs' articles, then I suggest you have a look at the Hearts' articles and see how many hobos are on there.

If you are trying to make out that Hearts do not have many supporters, then you really are onto a hiding there, do I really have to open my stats files to embarass you?

The fact is that the hobos don't look good, Hearts had to put up with endless stick from you guys all last season, therefore what goes around comes around.

I apologize for my earlier disparaging remarks about the old firm. I realise they beat my useless team due to superior footballing ability, not some sort of sad conspiracy that I referred to earlier. I just don't like to admit that Hearts are a below average football team who area always top of the disciplinary league due to their agricultural approach to football! Lets face it, they arenot even Dundee Utd or Aberdeen, never mind a threat to the old firm!

Still Celtic and Rangers only win because they get loads of penalties and cheat, not like Hearts. If you look at the stats Hearts, Celtic and Rangers scored 5 pens each last year but I''ll ignore that cos it is easier to blame made up old firm bias for my own teams failings!

Yours in ignorance!

Victoria Ian
