MIXU PAATELAINEN today insisted the Hampden showdown between SPL bosses and referees will lead to an improvement in the relationship between clubs and the whistlers.
The Hibs manager, along with skipper Rob Jones, was at the national stadium for the summit called amid a series of spot-kick rows which have overshadowed the start of the new season.

Paatelainen himself is in the middle of a two-match ban after be
ing sent to the stand following a spat with referee Brian Colvin during a pre-season clash with Cowdenbeath at Central Park.

But today he claimed yesterday's clear the air meeting, at which every club was represented along with SFA referee supremo, development officer and ex- official Hugh Dallas and several top whistlers, can only be good for the game.

While unwilling to go into exactly what was discussed, Paatelainen said: "There was a lot of very frank talking and I think it cleared up some issues.

"It was straight talking, asking questions, asking about consequences. It was good and I think it will help create a better understanding between managers, players and referees.

"We are all in it together, we all want to make the game fair, to have it free-flowing and I think it is important all parties talk to each other and realise what the difficulties are for each side, that we understand each other."

Paatelainen believes the relationship between referees and players hasn't changed since his days starring for Dundee United, Aberdeen and Hibs among others, but feels the intrusion of television cameras has made life more difficult for the man in the middle.

He said: "I think the game has become quicker which makes the job even more difficult but the big difference is that, with the number of cameras at games, everything is seen from a number of different angles allowing people to speculate on what mistakes, if any, have been made.

"It obviously does not make it any easier for the referees but players, too, can get punished if they are caught on camera doing something the referee has missed."

Paatelainen admitted his own experience of sitting in the stand, he was in the directors' box as Hibs defeated Falkirk at the weekend and won't be allowed in the away dugout as his side faces Inverness on Saturday, had lent him a different perspective on the game.

And he revealed he's now considering perhaps spending at least part of each match viewing from that vantage point rather than pitch level.

He said: "I would consider sitting in the stand perhaps for the first half to see how things develop and then go downstairs if need be. I'd never done it before and with the fact the boys won I may be should do it a bit more often."

Meanwhile, Paatelainen believes goalkeeper Andy McNeil will be fit to board the team coach bound for the Highlands tomorrow after he picked up a thigh knock against the Bairns.

He said: "Andy is making progress. He'll have another light training session tomorrow and he feels he should be okay. He's a very tough character, determined and he won't be fazed by any little niggle."

This meeting will only improve things if the refs stop giving the Bigot Brothers unjust decisions.

The whole of Europe now know that the refs here cheat and favor the teams from the Weedge..

It's now getting emabrrasing - aint it funny how the Great un-washed always get caught out in Europe because they suddenly find themselves without an extra man!!!

This meeting yesterday seems to be more of a whitewashing exercise rather than anything to concrete.

I saw Basketball Barry attended with a spring in his step- maybe he had several envelopes in his pocket containing wads of notes that would ensure that like last season he could go this one without getting booked.

Lets have trial by TV. The referee's performance will be reviewed and for significant mistakes like the penalty incident at Dundee on Sunday he loses a proportion of his match fee. After all, if players lose out as a result of the referee's poor decision then the referee deerves to be punished with a fine when he makes a mistake. There would be the arguement that the referee can only call it as he sees it, but that still cuts both ways as the effect of his wrong decision affects the players and the clubs.

If referees are not favouring old firm as it sometimes appears then there is a lack of consistency. At the start of a game all players should be equal and not targeted before game starts. Ok maybe Miko did dive but he was fouled before it, and why no free kick for the foul. Why was Broadfoot not booked for his dive. Come on refs British players have been diving for years and one Mr McCoist was no exception. Just play it fair referees and stop targeting players. Punish players if they are guilty but not on a whim.

#1 Wookie - spot on.
Didn't they have on of these "clear the air" meetings last season and the season before that ???
Lot of bloody good it did, eh ?
As long as we have OF puppet muppets such as Richmond, Smith, Brines & Clark, the other teams in the SPL have no chance.
Scottish football is fast becoming like Serie A was 10 years ago.

#2 SCAFFOLD you are a basket case!!!

1. What has HEARTS goalkeeper problems(your perception of same is HEARTS signing the keeper that HIBS wanted but could not afford) got to do with a meeting with refs.

2. No chance of getting away with a spelling mistake by owning up after pulling me up for 'several'.

Back to article... #12 agree 100%(well lets say 99% as you are a Hibby)

Pains me to agree with you!!!!

These 'clear the air' meetings take place every year. Same result season on season though. The Association are as much to blame though as the referees just hide behind them.

Now that the referees are being paid more, they should surely become more accountable for their actions. Two weeks into the season, two astonishing gaffes involving Celtic and still absolutely no change in the status quo. How much longer are we to put up with this blatant cheating? Craig Levein should not have accepted the fine and the other clubs should be backing him up. Time to stand up, me thinks.

PS - Charlie Richmond. I hope your injury was nothing trivial. Enjoy the pain. Cheat.

#14 - we had Charlie 7 times last season as ref. I hope his injury prevents him reffing us for quite some time.

Here here. Richmond's performances against us have been nothing short of disgraceful. It's akin to watching a wee bairn in a sweetie shop - put a whistle in the fools mouth and he's made up. I'll reiterate - Cheat.

Hibs could be set to splash the £100,000 transfer fee received from Crewe for Clayton Donaldson to prise midfielder Alan Gow from Rangers.

Gow has been out of favour at the Gers since signing back in the summer of 2007 and is hoping to move prior to the end of the current transfer window.

Walter Smith has consistently refused to play the midfielder despite making him one of his first signings when he signed him on a Bosman from Falkirk and will be happy to see the player of the Gers wage bill.

The 25 year old rejected moves to both Burnley and Norwich during the summer as he is keen to stay in Scotland.

Aberdeen, Hearts, Dundee United and Motherwell are all monitoring the player's situation as well as Hibs but the Hibees are poised to make a cash bid as well as offering a substantial wage.

Boss Mixu Paatelainen sees the Scotland B international as the final piece of his midfield jigsaw which has seen the arrival of Frenchman Steven Thicot and Joe Keenan.

#22 - Not sure which newspaper you cut and pasted this from, but I'd suggest its total pants.

Alan Gow refused to go to as part of the Lafferty deal as his contract at Rangers would not have been bettered by Burnley. Why would Hibs be able to offer a more attractive deal?

Gow was offerred terms by Hibs last year, he turned them down in favour of chasing an easy buck by signing for Rangers. I can't see why he'd want to sign for us now.

And more to the point, why would we want to push the boat out for a player who has not seen first team football since he left Falkirk, some 16 months ago?
