HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today insisted he won't allow tonight's glamour friendly with Spanish giants Barcelona to descend into farce – even although both sides will use up to seven substitutes.
Paatelainen is determined to give as many of the 18 players who will strip for his side the chance to savour the moment, but he revealed he isn't planning to make seven separate changes.

He said: "If each side was to do that then there would be 14
stoppages, it would become a farce. I have my thoughts but I'd rather change a group of players than make seven individual substitutions.

"I'd like to give as many of our players as possible the chance to play against what are some of the best players in the world. I'm going to have some players disappointed because they won't be in the squad and others upset because they are not in the starting line-up.

"Experience is very important. I was watching a television programme yesterday which showed how many players over the age of 30 there are in some English Premier League sides, it was amazing.

"But we have a very young bunch of players so this is, as in the InterToto Cup matches against IF Elfsborg, a chance for them to gain some experience. Whatever happens in the game I am sure they will take plenty out of it.

"It's a big, big test for us and it will be interesting to see how we cope but, again, it is all part of our preparation for the start of the SPL season and, as I have said, we'll get more from a game like this than simply taking a friendly which we know we can easily win by six or seven goals."

And Paatelainen had a word of reassurance for Barca signing Alexander Hleb who had voiced his concern that tonight's match at Murrayfield may be too aggressive.

The Hibs boss said: "Obviously they are trying to avoid injuries, but so are we. We don't want injuries just before the League starts and run the risk of them not being available for Kilmarnock on August 9.

"It's important that the game is played in the right manner and, hopefully, there are no injuries. However, there is a big difference between being competitive and over-aggressive. I never encourage my players to be over-aggressive."

And don't forget there is a slightly higher pollen count and a 2% higher chance of rain!

We should also take into account the fact that Mars is aligned with Jupiter and stocks of anchovies are down by a third on last year.

Get over it guys you just don't have the same draw as your more successfull and larger city opponents.

I believe the game is not LIVE on TV this year too like it was last year.

There is also the fact that there is no other friendly being played in the city at the same time like there was last year... but then there was noone there watching Hibs play a premierhip side at Easter road was there?... No they were all at Murrayfield adding 1mil to hearts' accounts weren't they?

LOL! LOL!

What did the thousands of millions of Hibs fans learn about theit team watching Hearts play barca last season?

The no-hopers we beat 6-0 were German and not Hungarian and the Scottish no-hopers barca play tonight will probably get a similar horsing... Oh well at least there won't be many people there to see it eh?

Very well if you are wanting be all sensible then i would say that they used last night as a wee chance to see how well they have learned csaba's ideas against a poor side where they could flex their muscles and get into a stride, play all the players and have a look at who is following his ethos best and then pick from those 25 players the ones that seem to have adapted best to the style and play them against the good standard of oposition that is Kaiserslautern.

Pretty standard pre-season stuff really... Will that do you?
19

Who?,

24/07/2008 14:33:56
#13- hearts scored goals against the german select, hibs havent scored in their last 6 games.

#18 - your correct.

The german select hearts put 6 past are probably far better than hibs.

point taken, but at the end of the day kaiserslautern will be a good test but watching your team playing amateurs at walking pace is not going to tell you a whole lot about them really is it.i see what your saying about playing poorer opposition but surely there could have been at least a profesional outfit to play against.i just dont get organising complete mis matches even at this stage of the season

I am sorry... i am trying so hard to avoid the puns like... 'i just dont get organising complete mis matches even at this stage of the season' etc.... Ah... Like barca are?

Sorry but you just keep setting them up... right... sorry.... compose myself again...

I think the first two games were to get the fitness levels up (Glentoran and Pars) and for Csaba to look and see what is in the squad.

The game last night will be the first chance for him to narrow down to a 25 man squad and try out two fifferent formations with what he sees as his strongest squad.

Last night was the start of the process of playing steadily better opposition in the hope of reaching a peak of comfort on the ball and fitness with a good idea on who is a first pick and who can do what.

Next you steadily improve the standard of opposition before peaking at the start of the SPL season.

This is just my view of things but it seems to be quite a sensible option after last seasons disaterous pre-season campaign.

Incidently, Hibs pre-season looks to be a bit more like our one last season in terms of organisation.

With your vast knowledge of the game why didn't you apply for the job? The chance to bring pleasure to the massive number of people who follow your team must have been appealing as it seems to me that with the exception of a few Scottish Cup wins you've achieved no more success than your small time neighbours. Surely this huge support should have carried you to honours on a regular basis. Where did it all go wrong?

BBB,

We have underachieved for years yes, I know this and have not denied it. I do however take exception to the suggestion that we have a similar success rate to Hibs.

You pass off a couple of Scottish Cup wins as irrelevant... We are the only team outside the OF to have won it in ten years so actually twice in that time is quite an achievment compared to the rest of the 20 odd professional teams and part time clubs that have entered the competition each year.

We are also the SPL's third most successfull team outside the OF with three third places and a second place since it's inception and we have also finished third twice in consecutive seasons.

By your tone you are obviously one of the great unwashed who no longer have OF threads to comment on so now have an interest in the Edinburgh clubs so i will hasten to add that yes we are a fair bit behind the OF in terms of success but then we are a fair bit ahead of the rest too so since i wasn't even mentioning Celtic or Rangers I feel vindicated with my assesment of the diferent fortunes of Hearts and hibs.

Anyway in the last three years Rangers have not finished any higher than our best finish and they have only won a Disney (matter) Cup more than we have too in terms of silverwear so really I think they are tyerrible underachievers too... just like Celtic are in Europe for a club of their size.

But as i said i was talking Hearts and hibs not Rangers and celtic so what is your issue?

Settle down son. I've supported Hibs for the last 50 years and was simply admitting that whilst you do have more sympathisers than us your success rate has been almost as appalling. I don't think that was reason enough to comment on my personal hygiene but I'll go home and shower now before going to watch my wee team do their best.

"As would be expected, the local authorities are very sensitive about the area surrounding the Olympic Green. However, the negative effect of this is that simple tasks, like catching a taxi, become incredibly difficult due to traffic restrictions. Some of our staff, who have been relying on taxis as the only means of transport to their hotel, were forced to take an hour-long walk back yesterday." d'oh

My business is my business...sorry but havent your parents ever told you not to give out personal info online to strangers?....lol....at 15 or even 18 for that matter there is no minimum wage.... you wont have qualifications so cannot possibly be doing a skilled job....Therefore I suggest you have a little saturday/summer job working in either MacDonalds, or a supermarket?

Gorgie's Finest,

I used to think that the 'Disgrace of Edinburgh' was the unfinished building on top of Calton Hill, now I know better, it's the untalented team from Scabby Leith.

I have no doubt if missed by our great media at least the Hibs fans will be up in arms as the were against any none Hibee player all last season on these threads.
