Published Date: 26 August 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen will kick off his Co-Operative Insurance Cup campaign tonight without skipper Rob Jones and winger Alan O'Brien after the pair were ruled out by knee injuries.
Both players took knocks in the 1-1 draw against Inverness at the weekend, although O'Brien's absence is more of a precautionary measure.

Hibs host Morton at Easter Road in the second round of the competition and Paatelainen admitted that it was a blow to be without the Irishman, who has hit a rich vein of form in recent weeks after struggling to establish himself last season.

The Finn is also without Steven Thicot and Kevin McCann, although goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay is back in contention after returning from the Olympics with Belgium.

Paatelainen said: "Alan took a knock on his knee during the match against Inverness at the weekend, it's more of a niggle than anything else but we didn't want to risk making it any worse.

"It's unfortunate for Alan because he has had a good run in the side and has hit good form.

"He has had a regular place in the starting line-up in the pre-season games and the first few games of the SPL because he has performed well in those matches and in training. And I think that there is still plenty to come from him as well.

"Everyone has a different role to play in the team and Alan has real pace, he always worries opposition defences. We will miss that tonight, but we have other players who are waiting for their chance, and hopefully it will only be the one game that he misses."

Ma-Kalambay has spent the last month with the Belgium squad at the Beijing Olympics where they reached the last four and Paatelainen is delighted to be back up to his full complement of goalkeepers again, adding: "Maka is back and will be in the squad for tonight's game. He trained with us for the first time yesterday and is keen to be back playing again. It is good he is back because it gives us more strength in numbers in that area and he is a quality keeper too. His height gives us something extra and it is always good for players to be involved with their national side because it gives them confidence and the chance to recognise that they are among the best in their country."

Meanwhile Abdessalam Benjelloun, who has joined Charleroi on loan until January, revealed today that he is hoping to make his move to Belgium permanent.

The Moroccan striker has been farmed out after struggling with his fitness and being unable to hold down a regular first-team spot last season.

He made his first appearance for the Belgian side at the weekend, stepping off the bench to net the winner five minutes from time in the 1-0 victory over Roeselare.

The striker said: "There is an agreement in my contract that gives Charleroi the chance to buy me before january. If Charleroi decide to use this option, I will be happy. I wanted to leave Hibs because I need to try something new."

As many nice goals as Benji scored he becomes a passenger in too many matches to be a consistently dependable choice at this level. Maybe one day he'll realise that his value is as much related to his application as his talent.

Ooh... We are talking Morton here though are we not?

Aren't you all being a little dismissive of them? After all they will be right up for this one and will see Hibs as beatable... They need only look to Clyde and.. (ahem)... Cowdenbeath for inspiration here.

Hibs still have to be overwhelming favourites but I just think that a fair few Hibbies seem to bewilderingly enough see this as a forgone conclusion... This is the big nana skin tie as far as i see it.

Hibs could struggle here I think. 2 clubs round about the same level of quality - both teams will be evenly matched, BUT..... Hibs have a LOT of pressure on them to perform, given their poor run of results so far. (preseason included - abysmal).

Could be quite humiliating I fear - Morton to go through on penalties. Faataleinen won't last long from what i can see.

#5 Hibernia & #8 Private Pike

I pointed out to PP at the weekend that this is now Hogg's 5th defected goal for the opposition this season including games against Elfsberg and Barcelona. Maybe he would be better leaving the shot for the 'keeper to deal with and not blindly sticking a leg out from 5 yards away. Or better still, get closer to the opposition player and tackle properly.

Jone was not wandering on Saturday, the guy go in a position to have a shot from the right hand edge of the penalty box because he beat Hanlon comprehensively who committed too early.

No 8 and 19 (especially the fool private pike)

Surely if the ball has hit Hogg then he is in exactly the right position!!! As a defender you try to put your body between the ball and the goal, which is exactly what Hogg did, if the ball cannons off you and goes in its nothing more than bad luck. On many more occasions though the ball will hit off him and go away from the danger area. Actually think about what your saying!

And private pike, remember to keep count of the number of jones mistakes/number of times he comes flying out of defence to chase a striker when no need to what so ever. Cause i could put my mortage on the fact his mistakes/positional errors far out number Hoggs mistakes.

Go and watch the goal again from saturday, when the inverness player heads the ball backwards in the centre circle jones should turn and burst a gut with HIS MAN to get back into the box and let rankin close the ball down, but no what does Jones do he keeps chasing the ball into their half!!! leaving his man to run into the box and leave Hogg to pick up two in the box.

and no.19 how is it possible for Hogg to get closer to the ball for the goal?? when he has his man and Jones' to mark in the box.

We just need to disagree on this one. Hogg is deflecting relatively easy saves for the keeper into his own net by being TOO LATE to close down the opposition player and flicking at shots from 5 yards away giving the keeper who has already committed to the save no chance. Once or twice a season is bad luck, 5 times in 7 or 8 games is poor positioning and poor technique. I did think about what I was writing, I have commented on this before. Hogg can be good but he is responsible for about 15 goals a season with various errors. Jones makes them too I agree, but if we rely upon Jones for his arial power, then we need a safe partner for him to be good on the ground.

Its obvious!!

#19 yes I watched the highlights several times last night and Jones was well out of position for the Caley goal in my opinion.

IIRC you can see Jones running into the ICT half just as their player hoofed the ball up the park to Cowie. At which point he kind of strolled past Hanlon then there was a big gap where Jones should have been. Hogg comes across to try and stop the shot and just as the ball hits the back of the net and Cowie runs away celebrating you can then see Jones getting back into the box. I hasten to add I watched it on the BBC iplayer and havent watched it on Interactive yet.

PS I have an interactive CD-Rom I could loan you on typing skills. Only kidding Mr Observer.

Go and watch the goal from saturday again and tell me how it is possible for Hogg to come and close that shot down any quicker?? As soon as Hanlon is beaten (far too easily by the way) Hogg is out to him, and he had to leave his own man to try to block the shot.

On this occasion there is no way you can say Hogg wasn't out quick enough, he couldnt get out any quicker. And again if you watch the goal, he didnt flick at the ball at all, his feet are planted on the ground and the ball hits the inside of his thigh, this isnt bad technique at all!!

Football as they say is all about opinions. We can argue blue faced but for me the whole positioning of our back four (And others) was appalling. I believe any pro defender would admit they are in trouble when they`ve been turned and have to defend racing back to their own goal. That`s trouble right away and the loss of the goal on Saturday was further compounded by having the full back isolated, one on one, as was Hanlon. The lad didn`t handle the situation well but there ought to have been another player (Of any description) doubling up with him. Instead of opening up a chance for himself, the Caley player at best should have met immediately with another opponent. This merely emphasised how out of shape the defence and indeed the team are at times. Defend and attack in numbers is the key in any scenario but it takes great fitness, organisation and concentration to achieve.

Ok Hibernia, I will accept your account of Jones positioning as I don't have time to look at the game again (or the inclination!). But, Hibs had a 2 on 1 situation and should have been able to crowd Cowie out if:

1) Hanlon had done what a full back should do and jockey Cowie further left without being sold in the tackle.
2) Hogg had not made a wild lunge and deflected an innocuous shot out of McNeil's reach.

Rearrange these words for me please:

'mix defensive up'

Also try:

'load chances barrow missed'

Since you dont have time (or the inclination) to watch the highlights let me just say that Hogg did not make a wild lunge and flick the ball in, he had 2 feet planted on the ground and the ball hit inside of his thigh. On other occasions you may be right and il watch for it, but on this occasion he was not in the wrong at all.

For the casual reader, an explanation. Hibernia and me disagree for 15 months now on the worth of Jones to the team. I say he is indispensible and Hibernia criticises his tendancy to be out of position following the target like a private detective on a mission. Also often known as a Private Dick! Or was it Pike?

Hogg is just a prawn in the debate!

Wait a minute, prawns are a bit smelly. Am I saying that Hogg had a stinker? No, actually I quite like Hogg if he could cut out these og's. And if Jones would reduce his wanderings, that would be fine too. Matbe time to find a midfield ball winner?

we have one in thicot, shame he got injured first game. IMO mixu is well aware of the problem of Jones coming out of position in areas he shouldnt be. He had two options, drop him or try to fix the problem. Against Wigan for example there were quite a few occasions where Jones was marking Heskey and Heskey would come deep looking for the ball into feet, usually this is what catches Jones out, but as soon as Heskey did this Thicot picked him up, and actually Thicot spent as much time marking Heskey as jones did. So i think thats how we are going to fix it, just a shame Thicot got injured, and why im surprised Murray isnt playing sitting mid.

Hibs and Morton ARE a roughly similar level of quality.

Morton gubbed Partick, drew with st johnstone, and saturday was their first defeat.
Hibs have squeezed past falkirk, drew with inverness and got taken apart by cowdenbeath. (Not to mention your abysmal experiences in 'europe' LOL!!).

There isn't much between the teams - as I say, Morton on penalties for me. Obviously hibs might fluke it, but they won't be far ahead on class or anything.

Exclusive: Celtic misfit Derek Riordan set for cut-price return to Hibs

Aug 26 2008 By Gordon Parks

DEREK Riordan is poised to complete a sensational return to boyhood heroes Hibs.

The frozen-out Celtic striker's switch back to Easter Road for a fee of around s100,000 is on course to be completed before the close of the transfer window on Monday.

Riordan, 25, has endured a nightmare two-year stint at Parkhead where he's publicly fallen out with Hoops boss Gordon Strachan over his lack of first-team opportunities.

But the Scotland striker, who still has a year left on his Celtic contract, is on the verge of kick-starting his career where it all began.

Strachan snapped up the Edinburgh-born attacker in a s300,000 summer swoop back in 2006.
Now the SPL champions are willing to write off a transfer fee loss in order to get him off their wage bill.

It's also believed Riordan would accept a drop in salary for a fresh start in a bid to rediscover the form that saw him hit 64 goals in 146 appearances before his ill-fated switch to Parkhead.

Seriously though, those two could be seriously good news for us. If the Ned gets himself back on track, forgets about the last two years, and starts scoring again then who knows?

I forecast Fletch and the Ned signing for Real Madrid in two years.

Sadly, as Rolland says, it could still go wrong. Bizarre that such a numpty is starting to speak sense.

Big one this for the cabbages. While Morton will go in as clear favourites, I'm picking an upset.

Sure as day follows night Grade A plank a 2 all draw against Morton, the SPL are bricking it over that result. Morton to do it on Pens now, I mean with your keeper they are sure to score all 5, just have to trundle it goal wards.

If you hate the Edinburgh f@rts clap your hands...

Clap - Clap - Clap...

Rolland,

#100 Whats with the clap, is that what you've got ?

Nah doubt you've had a ride in yer puff. Any self respecting Hibby would be in hiding after being 2 nil down and clawing it back, yet your on here giving it big licks, any SPL can beat Hibs on this showing home or away, and make no mistake you won't find yersel coming back from 2 down against SPL teams.

Enjoy the relegation struggle your going to find your team in.

Question for you, why aren't you at the game ?
97

mcaitchi,

Just when I thought you were regaining some common sense and posting some sensible things on this site, I read your comments above.

You've reverted back to type.

110 - Coventry v Newcastle on Sky Sports 2, great end to end cup tie, extra time but plenty to play for Coventry 3 - 2 down, just about scored in injury time at the end of the 1st period of extra time. Its far from over as well.

I was listening to the radio but turned the TV on just after you went 2 down.

Do they do Buckie in Scouse land ? Thought it was just the weegies that drank that.
