Zemmama's loan deal down to Hibs' compassion

Published Date: 04 September 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today insisted Moroccan star Merouane Zemmama is not trying to engineer a move away from Easter Road following the shock news the little midfield star is to join Al-Shaab in the United Arab Emirates on loan.
Zemmama's departure follows hard on the heels of countryman Abdessalam Benjelloun moving to Belgian outfit Royal Charleroi on loan, the striker subsequently claiming there's an agreement to make that switch permanent.

But today Paatelainen was adamant the two situations were entirely different with Zemmama leaving on compassionate grounds to be with his pregnant wife Zineb who, at 17, is too young to gain a visa to enter this country.

Hibs made strenuous effort to have the Home Office relax their regulations – designed to prevent forced marriages – in Zemmama's case but the civil servants were unflinching.

Chairman Rod Petrie said: "We made inquiries but seemingly there is this rule that under 18s are not allowed in regardless of the age you can get married in the UK.

"The player tried and we tried but we came up against this rule and there was no way round it so the player and his agent came up with this alternative."

Paatelainen admitted he'd reluctantly resigned himself to allowing Zemmama to make a temporary move abroad in the circumstances, the playmaker having just forced his way back into the side after recovering from a broken foot.

However, he insisted Zemmama will be back in Edinburgh to see out the final two years of his contract which runs to 2011.

He said: "It's a difficult situation but there was no point in demanding that Merouane stay leaving us with a player whose mind was elsewhere. We tried to help, but the rules are there and cannot be broken.

"Obviously I am disappointed because I'd obviously have liked to have kept him and he was very much in my plans. On the other hand, I am glad we were able to help and we now look forward to him returning in a year.

"Although people may think Merouane and Benji are very close, that what one does the other wants to do, they are totally different characters. It's just the way things have happened."

Petrie added: "We were very clear and Merouane was very clear, it is a one-year loan deal with no options to buy."

Meanwhile, Hibs will sell tickets direct to Rangers fans for the SPL clash at Easter Road later this month after rejecting the Ibrox club's bid to impose a five per cent levy for distributing tickets for away matches.

Both sides of the Old Firm have introduced the charge claiming it helps offset the cost of administering to their large numbers of travelling supporters but Hibs chief executive Scott Lindsay insisted their move was wrong.

He said: "The existing system has been in existence for some years and, until now, enjoyed the support of all clubs."

But Zemmama is a perv for marrying a 17 year old which he is legally entitled to do in his own country and the UK for that matter.

It's really contrived if he's been hounded out.

Benji is a loan deal for a player clearly not happy.

Zoomer is being helped by the club given his own personal circumstances. If there is a conspiracy, Zemamma's part of it.

Can't see how Zoomer has broke any laws, hundreds of 17 year olds get married every year. It's not that long ago the age of consent in Scotland was 15, which by modern standards is low.

On the other hand here's a real beast who groomed his victim after meeting her in the street kicking a ball around with brother.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/282421.stm

Here's Big Fat Tory Waldo on the subject calling some Hertz fans hypocrites for slamming Rix's appointment. If they were hypocrites does that mean the fans doing the slamming were beast as well as Rix?

This is for all the punters who disliked Petrie!

After reading the story regarding Zemmama a lot of people here started slating the board again. When are people going to realize that Hibernian FC are of the best run clubs in Scotland.
We have just brought back Deeks which im sure Petrie got the best possible deal he could have for us,not only that he brings in another player on the same day.
He has turned the club around in a very short space of time and runs a tight ship.
IMO the man deserves nothing but respect from us fans. He takes on board what the fans think by bring back Deeks not only that but I believe that hiring Frank as manager was for us too.
Give the man the credit he deserves.

# Re Eddie Malofeev

Why is EEN / Scotsman allowing this racist baffoon to spout his bile on a football forum. It saddens me that so many people have risen to this sad little mans bait.

Fact - Zemmama has commited no crime by marrying a girl of 17.
Fact - Hibs have shown compassion in allowing him to go on loan.

What the Hibs supporters would like is for Zouma to show the same commitment by offering to extend his contract by a further year to take account of the year away.

Whilst, I have no doubts that he intends to return to see out the last two years of his contract I suspect that after a couple of months away from Scotland that resolve will soften and we may not see him in Hibs colours again

Fine display from S Fletcher and two goals a bonus:
I fully expect a full house at easter road for the visit of the arabs,
wish it would hurry,

Two good goals from Fletcher and another nice one from Kenneth.

Shame about the cr#p that keeps invading the threads though
