If you’re looking to stretch your legs over the Christmas break, here are 7 of the best winter walks in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
While it can be tempting to stay wrapped up warm at home during the Christmas holidays, venturing outside for a walk in the crisp air can be energising and enjoyable.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker, or just want to take a short stroll, there are plenty of places in Edinburgh and the Lothians to go walking in winter. There are many scenic routes in the city, as well as others within close driving distance.
Scald Law, the highest peak in the Pentland Hills, is a challenging but rewarding hike. This winter walk offers gorgeous panoramic views of snow-topped mountains and the scenic Loganlea Reservoir. Photo: WalkHighlands
Located in the heart of Midlothian, walkers can enjoy riverside ambles and woodland walks in Dalkeith Country Park. There are 1,000 acres to explore, and a variety of trails - many of which are suitable for bikes and buggies. After a walk, visitors can warm up with a coffee or a soup at the park's restaurant and cafe. Photo: Joe Gilhooley
A short distance outside Edinburgh, near Linlithgow, is Beecraigs Country Park and Cockleroy Hill. Along the relatively easy route is a picturesque loch within a forest, as well as a park with red deer and highland cows grazing in the fields. On a clear winter's day, walkers get a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape - as well as the Forth bridges in the distance. Photo: John Murray
