Edinburgh Council has approved a motion to honour Mr Gilzean.

Tom Gilzean's name has been added to a list of potential street names in Edinburgh after an Evening News petition gained 5,000 signatures.

Edinburgh City Council approved a motion from Lord Provost Frank Ross at this morning's Development and Management Sub committee to name a prominent street in the Capital after Mr Gilzean.Mr Gilzean's name will be added to the Edinburgh City Council bank of street names - a list from which names are drawn whenever new streets are built.

Lothian MSP Miles Briggs, who tabled a motion to the Scottish Parliament to name a street after Mr Gilzean, said: “I am delighted that City of Edinburgh Council have added Tom Gilzean to their bank of street names for Edinburgh.

“The legendary fund raiser and war veteran was a remarkable man and having a Tom Gilzean Street will be a fitting way to honour him.”

Mr Gilzean, a legendary fundraiser. died in November aged 99.
