Cavalcade to march on despite tram works on Princes Street
THE traditional cavalcade for this year's Edinburgh Festival will not be diverted, despite extensive roadworks on Princes Street.
It had been feared that the popular parade would have to follow the example of the Leith Festival and be re-routed because of the tram works.
But cavalcade director David Todd confirmed there would be no rethink on the route of the eye-catching event.
Mr Todd, who takes charge of the cavalcade for the fifth year running on August 3, said: "Given the state of the street due to tram works, there were doubts as to whether the cavalcade would go on. But I've been assured by the city council that we'll have the street to ourselves again on the first Sunday of the Edinburgh Festival.
"I had a lot of angst these past few months but what's particularly pleasing now is that the council is saying that, even when the tramlines are there, the cavalcade will go on. Obviously they believe that it remains an ideal curtain-raiser for the festival."
