EDUCATION bosses today confirmed that three Edinburgh primary schools facing the axe are to close.
Following a six-week public consultation, they have decided that Lismore Primary in Bingham and Bonnington Primary in Leith will close at Christmas, while Westburn Primary in Wester Hailes will shut next June.

Parents are being sent letters today to inform them of the education department's decision, in a move which is likely to spark a fresh wave of angry protests.

A review of the school estate was carried out following a massive decrease of 6000 pupils in the city in the last ten years, meaning there are currently 9500 spare primary school places.

It has been revealed that the depleted numbers in the three schools are costing the council as much as £16,000 per pupil per year, compared to a city average of £3000. Education leader, Councillor Marilyne MacLaren, today insisted all savings made on buildings costs will be ploughed back into city schools.

It has been decided that pupils from Lismore Primary will be transferred to Brunstane Primary and pupils from Bonnington Primary will go to Leith Primary for the start of the new term in January.

When Westburn Primary School closes at the end of the school year next June, pupils will be moved to either Murrayburn, Sighthill or Canal View Primary Schools, based on where they live in the current school catchment area.

The public consultation, which ended last month, saw hundreds of parents turn up to a series of public meetings to discuss the future of the three schools.

Parents at Lismore Primary warned education leaders that closing the school would turn the Bingham community into a "ghetto", while Bonnington parents appealed for the school to be kept open at least until the end of the school year next June.

Parents of children at Westburn claimed the school was only facing the axe because of a series of council blunders in the consultation.

The education department's decision will go before councillors for final approval at a meeting of the full council next Thursday, and it is expected parents will make a last-ditch attempt to convince them to vote against the recommendation.

Councillor MacLaren said she was aware this is a "difficult time" for the school communities involved, but believes the decision is "in the best interests of all school pupils in the city" in the longer term.

She said: "If the council agrees these proposals next week, every effort will be made to ensure a smooth transition for pupils joining their new school in January.

"We will be in discussion with all of the receiving primary schools regarding familiarisation visits for parents and pupils.

"We are recommending Christmas closures for Bonnington and Lismore Primary schools as both of their rolls are likely to drop further still should the closure be confirmed and we feel it would be better for the children to be in a more settled environment as soon as possible."

A cross-party forum was set up at the start of the year to look at the rationalisation of Edinburgh's school estate. It agreed a number of criteria to be used to decide which schools would close, including poor exam results, falling rolls and high running costs.

Do they really not have a more flattering photo of this poor woman? She looks like she's just eaten a lemon... with a couple of wasps inside it.

I see they've changed it...

Now it looks as though she's expecting something really nasty to drop on top of her any minute now...

Well, I've always thought that Lismore was first in the firing line since the LPAG prevented it's intended closure a couple of years ago. I think it's the councils revenge.

Give it another couple of years, it'll be demolished and the ground used to build 'affordable' homes for sale and rent. The surrounding schools will become overcrowded, teaching standards will drop because there will be too many pupils and not enough teachers.

Thing is though, it was always a done deal from the beginning, so IMO, protesting parents won't make any difference. Public consultations are just a facade.

Michael.

Maybe it isn't a lemon with a wasp she's swallowed, perhaps it's the contents of a secret policeman's balls.

Re mrs Maclarens wish for a suitable photo; saw her in the High Street on Tuesday- close up!
Any photograph would in anyones book better better than the real thing; school closed early for the day- some permanently so fewer teaching posts; where is the money coming from- is there a subtle tie up somewhere?

Funny how at the meeting with the 3 head teachers this morning Gillian Tee said "There may be a leak!" Then upset parents read this report in the news and started contacting the schools. Now there are upset staff and distraught parents and children who are confused.

Gemma Fraser needed to say in the first paragraph that the article was only about Gillan Tee's recommendation to the council and that the vote is next Thursday in the FULL council meeting. But then again the press will leak the outcome first not even giving the staff the proper chance to be told and parents should be given the chance to hear it properly too.

Also Gillian Tee has said that she intends on getting these 3 shut so she can move on to the next 3! Bet none of the schools will be in Marchmont or Morningside which is Mclaren's ward! Time to send Ms Tee back to the English LEA where she did all this before. No wonder they chased her out of town. If we got rid of her, we'd help the £18 million pound debt right away.

SABOTAGE!!!!!!!

This is another dirty underhanded trick to disrupt the kids and scare parents into moving their children so that when the day of Consultation comes around i.e. 20.11.08 the only decision will be to close Lismore due to no pupils!!!!

Very nasty, clearly they have the kids in mind :(

Thank goodness we at long last have a council that is willing and able to make unpopular albeit sensible decisions. The city is awash with primary schools some right next door to each other just about and with a declining population due to the shortage of affordable housing, making young families move out of the city, there will no doubt be more closures in years to come

#13 Please inform us how you were aware there was a meeting with the 3 Head Teachers, you seem to be well informed of what was also said at the meeting.
You didn't happen to be the minute taker were you ? .
Then again perhaps this information was leaked to you by one of The Head Teachers.
We all know how the Word "Leak" always pops up some where along the line, Don'T we.
You seem to have given us information that was not made aware to many people.
Could this really mean your name is indeed
"The Leaker"
