Park-and-ride expansion 'will set airport congestion soaring'

Published Date: 28 May 2008
FEARS have been raised over increased congestion on the approach roads to Edinburgh Airport with the expansion of the Ingliston park-and-ride.
Capacity at the site just off Eastfield Road has been more than doubled to 1085 spaces with the completion this week of an £2.7 million extension.

But airport bosses today warned the expansion will place further strain on the roads into what is n
ow Scotland's busiest airport.

They are pressing for new road links to their terminal because of concerns the 1960s-built, two-lane Eastfield Road is barely coping with the demands placed on it by traffic heading to the airport.

The original Ingliston site has been operating near capacity since it opened in 2005.

Council chiefs today said they are installing signals on the roundabout next to the park-and-ride to improve management of the increased traffic flow.

But airport chiefs said the expansion will only add to the traffic build-up at an already busy pinch point.

A spokeswoman for airport operator BAA said: "There is little doubt that the expansion of the park-and-ride facility will place further strain on what is already an overloaded road network.

"We have already seen how congestion on the A8 and Eastfield Road can bring traffic coming to or going from the airport to a standstill.

"This further strengthens the case for investment in new roads in the area While we are committed to increasing the number of our passengers who travel to and from the airport by public transport, good road access for our growing number of passengers continues to be vital."

The network of park-and-ride sites surrounding Edinburgh means there are now more than 3500 spaces for drivers to leave their cars at Ferrytoll, Newcraighall, Hermiston, Ingliston and Sheriffhall.

The opening of another at Straiton later this year will see this number rise by a further 600.

Councillor Phil Wheeler, the city's transport leader, said: "One third of Edinburgh's workforce travels to work from outwith the city. By providing secure, free parking and comfortable, efficient, fast bus services from the outskirts of town we are giving drivers a good alternative to taking their cars into the city centre.

"Along with the new site at Straiton, due to open in the autumn, we are currently looking for additional sites along the city boundary. That way we can further help ease the daily commute for thousands of drivers while doing our bit for reducing congestion and pollution."

A total of 100,000 cars used Ingliston and Hermiston park-and-ride in their first six months of operation.

What they should do is build a tram system

Well why don't BAA pay for the road instead of bleating about it. They make money out of every passenger that goes through their airport.

BAA submitted plans for a new road, what happened to that? Alsp what will happed to plans for a link road
from the M8/90s? All are badly needed. Let's fast track them.

Traffic lights. Hmm, yes, they always improve the traffic flow don't they?

Jenny - SHUSH!

What about a rail link! It would carry people from all over central Scotland into the airport and home again, just like they do at other major airports in the UK.

It would also get some of those buses off the roads.

Only Edinburgh could manage it - a scheme to reduce traffic congestion is thought to be going to cause traffic congestion.
:
Has anyone else seen that the A8 is going to be closed down to one lane east bound from just after the Royal Highland Show for 1 year because of roadworks to allow the tram construction. That'll make getting into Edinburgh a lot easier.

I use Ingliston whenever I want to go into Edinburgh, perhaps more park & rides should be built elsewhere?

#6 I think there is a rail line that goes right behind the airport. You would think that building a station should be fairly easy. But then joined up thinking isn't a speciality when transport is involved.

Use AND ELECTRIFY the existing rail infrastructure on the both the Fife lines with a station north of Gogar ie "Edinburgh Airport North" AND also at Ratho Station (the village is still called that) ie at "Edinburgh Airport South" on the main E&G-Airdrie/Bathgate line, or divert the main E&G line NORTH of the airport to the Fife Lines/Gogar, then rail users can Park & Ride from much further afield, at their LOCAL stations and travel to/from the airport by train. Furthermore, a travelator(tram?) to/from A N D connecting the aforementioned stations operating via the airport would also save the present frustrating and totally
unnecessary trip in-and-back-out again via Haymarket/
Waverley for passengers to/from Fife etc! It's HARDLY ROCKET SCIENCE and indeed gives FOOD (a type of fuel) FOR THOUGHT as FUEL OIL IS A RAPIDLY DIMINISHING AND FINITE RESOURCE!!!

FACT: The BAA contributed a massive sum towards the London Crossrail project, all for their beloved London airports, costing hundreds of millions.
But they won't pay a single bean for anything up here.

#11 Alex, you are a man of some genius and in years to come people will say your idea was such a breathtakingly simple one it's astonishing that nobody thought of it before.
I think you should offer your idea to the City of Edinburgh Council. You've not a moment to lose. There will come a day when the Central Library will have a Paterson Room.

Edinburgh is being turned into one large carpark and all thanks to our council which up until a wee while ago was labour for 40 years. The road in question has been tinkered with by dumbfooks fae the cooncil, traffic lights popping up,closing all the central turning turning points for its entire length forcing vehicles to go further than the need to to turn.

Oh aye and allowing RBS to build their HQ hasn't helped either.

baa - huge losses - it’s the end - I hear they are going bankrupt - Oil is running out and flying is to be axed - Joe will be suicidal - gordo broon is up here begging for more oil - food is at a premium and 1000 car parking spaces are tarmaced o’er arable land and Loki the Townie is still an uneducated dingle !

Peter Wyngarde,

Argghh! They ditched the wrong transport system, thats the problem, a train link to Edinburgh Airport would have had a massive impact on reducing traffic in this area, but no, it gets dumped and we get a tram system instead...
18

EISL,

Edinburgh 29/05/2008 00:17:12
There are two alternative proposals for a rail link to an airport station that could be built in the years after the tram link becomes operational. They are at:

http://www.eisl.org.uk

They are compatible with an expanded Park & Ride site and with the RHC's move to a new showground. The new rail station could serve these as well as the airport.
19

geekpie,

forfar 29/05/2008 09:44:27
The solution is clear: a big increase in parking charges at the airport in tandem with a shuttle bus service from the Park and Ride.

CRAGman,

P + R is, in principle, a good idea but there are many places around the UK where it's causing local congestion. It isn't always the best option in practice. But there best option - usually rail - would cost more.

EARL was the answer but I suppose Bonnie Prince Alex Salmond would never change his mind. But then if we approached the 'Donald' and got him to speak up in favour of EARL it would be up and running next Tuesday.
We could tell King Eck that a golf resort could be included and perhaps a car carrier on the train for his Lexuses [Lexi] [what is the plural of Lexus?] might help...........
