City council looking after more children

THE number of children being looked after by Edinburgh City Council has risen slightly over the past year.
The number of "looked after" children in the city stood at 1228 at March 31, compared with 1196 the previous year. Edinburgh has the second highest number of children in Scotland either being looked after by the council, or getting aftercare support. Glasgow is highest, with 2919.
The new figures released today by Scotland's chief statistician show that nationwide, 14,060 are receiving some form of care from local authorities - an eight per cent rise from 2006.
Forty three per cent of these were at home with parents, 15 per cent were with friends or relatives and 29 nine per cent were with foster carers. Twelve per cent were in residential accommodation.
