SPARTANS Community Football Academy is just a few votes away from a £50,000 prize as Scotland's top community club.
The north Edinburgh club has been shortlisted in the Scottish region for the Norwich Union Community Sports Fund Awards and is currently fifth in the national rankings to win the top cash prize.

For the next week, the public will be invited to vote for sporting initiatives they feel should be awarded the funds.

Club spokesman Douglas Samuel said: "We are extremely excited at the thought of winning the money, although we have an equal amount of excitement and nervousness.

"The prize money would open so many doors for this poor community."

The academy opened in July and aims to provide first-class facilities and deliver community coaching programmes across a variety of sports.

The new academy offers everything from floodlit football pitches to state-of-the-art physiotherapy facilities, and aims to be one of the top community clubs in Scotland in the next two years.

Voting for the scheme, on website www.joinourteam.com, ends on September 14.
