Basketball's Anderson hopes to cash in on 2012 boost

THOUGH the division of spoils has not yet been revealed, the announcement of increased funding from UK Sport for basketball's 2012 programme ought to be good news for Scots Olympic "wannabees", of which there are at least two in the United States.
One of the brightest of these is Portobello High School FP and former Edinburgh Kool Kat Rose Anderson, who this season moved to Central Oklahoma University in Edmond after a year at junior school and has already been making her mark with a place in
the starting five and some impressive statistics for the division two college side.

Probably best known as the player who scored the winning basket against Luxembourg when Scotland clinched the Junior Women's European Promotion Cup in Aberdeen three seasons ago, Rose is the younger sister of Commonwealth boxing gold medallist Kenny Anderson and she displays much of the same fighting spirit.

A member of the Great Britain Under-20 team last season, along with fellow Scots Mairi Buchan (also now in the US) and clubmate Annie Rowan, Anderson was converted to the position of point guard by the coach and caught the eye with her driving to the basket, though her somewhat erratic play in her new role also led to too many turn-overs.

Now restored to guard-forward, Anderson is averaging almost 11 points a game for the Bronchos, as her new US team are known, and she has an excellent three-point shot average of 0.36 per game.

"I'm playing pretty well – the style of play the coach uses suits me really well," she said. "But there's always room for improvement."

In their most recent game this week Central, who are undefeated after five games, walloped Mid-Western State 106-57 and, among their luckless opponents, was Anderson's former Scotland under-15 teammate and one time near neighbour in Portobello, Michelle Duff.

"It was awesome to see her after such a long time and good to chat to someone Scottish," said Anderson. "But we absolutely killed them, leading 64-19 at half-time, and, if the coach had kept us (the starting five] on, I reckon we would have scored 130."

Anderson scored 12 points in 19 minutes on court in this game, scoring five out of her seven shots from the field and one from two free throws.

Duff scored three points but only had seven minutes court time.

Former Falkirk Fury star Mairi Buchan meanwhile has also made a bright start as a freshman at Old Dominion University, a first division college in Virginia, top-scoring in one game with 15 points. Sadly none of the US-based British girls is available for the GB senior women's European Championship games next month because of college commitments.

But if Anderson and Buchan are not in the frame for the next series of Eurogames then some serious questions should be asked and many people will be highly disappointed if one or both of them is not playing in London 2012.

There are loads of girls better than her here in Scotland, she is only in the paper because of who her brother is.
