Elliot urges Hearts to let him leave

Published Date: 21 August 2008
CALUM ELLIOT has accepted that it is just a matter of time until he quits Hearts – he just wishes the Tynecastle club would hurry up and give him the green light to go.
The 21-year-old striker has fallen out of favour at Tynecastle in recent months and hasn't played a competitive match for the Jam Tarts since the beginning of May. Elliot made 24 appearances for Hearts in total in the last campaign, ten of those comi
ng off the bench, but he only featured in one friendly game this summer – Csaba Laszlo's first match in charge against Glentoran – and was left at home as the rest of the squad headed to Germany for their pre-season training camp.

It's clear that he isn't part of Laszlo's plans for this season and Dunfermline, Livingston, Inverness and MK Dons have all been credited with an interest in taking the player themselves.

But, with less than a fortnight to go until the transfer window closes, Elliot knows that time is running out for him to secure a move elsewhere – particularly as some of the clubs linked with him have been forced to look elsewhere because of the length of time they've been forced to wait.

Elliot, whose last goals for the club came in the 3-0 win away to Inverness, the youngster hitting a brace in that game back in March, conceded: "I will be leaving, it is just a matter of Hearts letting me go.

"I feel like I'm being messed about now, I just need to get away and hopefully they will realise that soon and something will be sorted as quickly as possible because I just want to be back playing football.

"Every player is the same, all you want to do is be out there on the pitch every week.

"It has been even more frustrating for me because I know that there has been interest shown in me but because clubs have had to wait so long, they've had to look elsewhere because the transfer window will be closing soon.

"It puts you in a dodgy situation, you start to wonder if something is going to happen now.

"But I hope that something can be sorted out in the next week or so because I can't keep training and playing with the reserves for the rest of the season. I think I might go off my head if that happens."

At the moment, Elliot is training and playing with the reserve side and having been a first-team regular just a matter of a year ago, it is a situation which the striker admits he is finding difficult to accept.

While insisting that he would be happy to remain at Tynecastle if he thought that he had a chance of winning his place back in the side, he conceded that a fresh start somewhere else would be the best solution for all parties concerned: "It's difficult for me right now because I know that my future lies elsewhere. And it's hard to go into training all week and prepare, knowing that you don't even have a chance of being involved.

"But I think that there are a lot of boys in the same boat and it's time that someone came and told us what is happening. We've all been left in limbo.

"Someone needs to get it sorted out because a lot of people are being messed about. I need to be playing.

"If I had to, I would stay at Hearts if I thought that there was a chance of me being involved.

"But I think that everybody knows that I probably need a fresh start somewhere else.

"I just need to be playing football and I think that everyone at the club knows that and it would be good if someone could just get the ball rolling so that I can move on.

"I don't know why things are taking so long. I'm ready to play again. My fitness is there, I've been working hard in pre-season and doing everything that I can to make sure that my fitness levels are up where they should be.

"But I've not played any games so I don't have the match sharpness yet. Once I get a few games under my belt hopefully it won't take me too long to get that back."

Elliot, who was loaned out to Motherwell for three months last season, came through Hearts' youth system before signing professionally in July 2004. While the last few months of his Hearts career have been soured somewhat by his protracted departure and the reaction to his inclusion in the starting line-up by some Jambos supporters, he admits that it will still be a huge wrench to leave Edinburgh if he does indeed move for pastures new over the next ten days, although mainly for family reasons.

He continued: "It will be difficult for me to leave a lot of the people at the club because, having spent such a long time there, I've made a lot of good friends.

"It will be harder to leave Edinburgh though, because this is where my family and my girlfriend are.

"But it's part and parcel of football. It happens to players all over the country and you have just got to accept it is happening to you, although it is difficult.

"Hopefully what I've been through over the last season or so will help to make me a stronger character and mean that I am able to deal with what is thrown at me in the future.

"I certainly think that I am a stronger person already but the only way I can find out for sure is to get back to playing football.

"It's what I love doing."

Despite his lack of game time for Hearts in recent months, Elliot was still part of Billy Stark's 22-man squad for last night's vital UEFA Under-21 Championships qualifier against Lithuania.

The young hitman came on as a first-half substitute in Marijampole for the injured Aberdeen striker Charlie Mulgrew as the Scots eased to a 3-0 victory that keeps them in contention to qualify for the finals.

He looked dangerous throughout the 62 minutes he was on the pitch, coming close with a header that beat the keeper but bounced over the crossbar.

Elliot was just delighted to be involved with the national side, and said: "I've not really played a game this season so it was good to have some involvement with a competitive match.

"It was good to be involved in training and preparing for a big match.

" It is always good to come away and work with Billy and Jim and to see how other coaches and players work.

"I just love being involved and it's good to be involved with your national team, no matter what level it is at.

"And we have got a really strong squad now, there are a lot of good players involved at Under-21s now.

"It's a good break from your own club. It's a bit like a fresh start for me, it's good to do that and to prepare and concentrate on your national team and to focus on that for a change, particularly because there has been so much at stake for us recently with the qualifying campaign.

"I want to start every game for Scotland – as does every player I suppose.

"But, the position that I am in just now, to get any kind of game time right now would be good.

"But just being involved is great right now."

Got to admit that reading this article it appears that Calum sounds a little too big for his boots and his 'attitude' needs checking.

If he was to play in the reserves for 6 months like Pospisil, Makela, Beniusis were made to and WORK on his game instead of complaining at how rotten he's being treated then he may just improve as a player and a person.

It's his lack of form in front of goals that has led to this predicament and a change in his attitude to the new coaching setup is needed.

For the record though... after seeing how woeful Makela played against Well i'd be replacing him with Calum.

#5- correct about his attitude.

He should buckle down and show a bit of humility. He is on excellent money for a boy of his age and he should appreciate it instead of spouting off in the press. What annoyed a lot of people last year was his continual mouthing off in the press without backing it up on the pitch.

The door should never be closed on any player but he is getting very close to having it slammed in his face.

Seriously immature, wherever he goes, for his sake I hope he learns how to become an adult, until he does, he will struggle on.
The talent is probably there but without the mindset its hopelessly wasted.

Not sure if you are Jambos... and don't really care.

But I think the type of stick Elliot has been getting especially since the 'you tube vid' have only contributed to an otherwise promising young professional losing all confidence... and Hearts suffer for it.

I've heard first hand the kind of stick he gets 'from his own supporters' at Tynecastle... and if any of you got that in the street you'd end up on an assault charge.

His form may have suffered and the goals have dried up for now... but the abuse he has received shows up a lot of fans to be pretty sick individuals.

#17 John,

The article doesn’t question his attitude as you say; but it shows it clearly for all to see. I agree that booing him onto the park is ridiculous sand counter-productive, but he always seems to have an excuse at hand. And to appear prancing about on the internet whilst playing appallingly on the pitch didn’t exactly endear him to the Hearts support, did it?

In this article, if he is being quoted correctly, he comes across as a petulant 12-year old. It’s not my fault, Hearts are messing me about, I’m fit and ready etc. etc. I’m afraid we’ve heard it all before.

He’s had enough chances as far as I’m concerned so it’s time for him to go (Makela too).

the youtube video is not the key issue here.

he was playing very, very badly long before that was exposed. the reckless and stupid sendings off i wasn't too keen on either. the constantly moaning to leave i'm not that keen on either. best for both parties is if he leaves asap.

i would bet anyone here that he will never play for a club bigger than hearts again in his career. with our current striker situation, a good striker could easily make the jersey his own. calum elliot isn't good enough to do that, and by the sounds of his whinging it seems he doesn't even want to.

This article pretty well sums up why most Hearts supporters became fed up with Elliott last season. Its all about himself and how he's been hard done by. I cannot remember seeing anybody put so little effort into their game. As a striker - he couldn't score goals, didn't cover back and chase, and rarely broke sweat.

I just wonder if we let him go (or when we let him go) will he come back and haunt us, I see him going to another Scottish club, not down south, and maybe someone else will get the potential out of him that we saw in the past, and the current Scottish under 21 selectors still see.

Don't be silly! Everybody knows the difference between a Mole and an Eliot. A Mole digs tunnels and leaves little piles of earth all over the pitch. An Elliot runs about all over the pitch and tramples the piles of earth back in.

Also, a mole is the one who spilt the beans to Barry (yes my heid's on fire) Anderson about what Vlad said re Stevie Banks when he addressed the players in the dressingroom on Saturday.

A Jambo come rain or shine,

I don't really see the problem here. He gets booed by his own fans whenver he plays so is desperate to leave. The new manager obviously has no intention of playing him so why would he want to stay? All he's saying is that he's annoyed that he's obviously not in the plans for this season but Hearts are dragging their feet and not letting him go elsewhere. It's a pretty rank situation to be in and i'm not surprised he's pi*sed off! Also, one minute we've got fans saying, "Get shot of him, he's useless" and the next they're on here telling him to knuckle down. You either want him here or don't - make up your minds.
#22 As for the video - it was made a couple of years ago - and it's not like he put it on you tube himself so you can't hold that against him!
Let him go on loan for a season - i reckon it would do him the world of good and he could return as a better player.

My opinion is shared by many more knowledgable than you or me including none other than wee ROBBO.

Think he might know a thing or two about what it takes for a striker to make it in the SPL.

As per my post this includes a change in attitude from Elliot.

Take your blinkers off & actually watch the boy ;there is NO DOUBT he has talent.
eg 2-3 CELTIC game in particular (boxing day 2006?) he was the best player on the park.

#46 Everyone goes on about that game
Every player can have one good game that was nearly 3 years ago and IMO he has went downhill since then

He definately needs a change of scene and a change of attitude

#47 - I am concerned about your maths 30+ is about a goal a game, are you expecting the same from the rest of the squad??? to enable us to make CL Qualification we will need about 2 per game at least.
47

Talk o' the Toun,

21/08/2008 14:25:28
#48 as I stated his potential is based on a change of scene/attitude.Agree game was two & seasons ago(jan 06 not Boxing day as i stated) but IMO only a player with POTENTIAL could have produced that level of performance.

No argument that he has went downhill since but this is down to his attitude not his ability.

The dissapointing thing is that under Csaba he had the opprtunity to start with a clean sheet & has (unlike MOLE IMO) he has not taken it.
48

21/08/2008 14:27:48

Bl00dy he11 Serg is busy today. Weirdo, please do the world a favour and get a job and a life. Not necessarily in that order, although I'd like to see you contribute to society rather than leech from it.

Anyway, Calum's ability was definitely there before, and whilst it has been better hidden in recent times I believe it's still there. I'm not questioning his ability.

His application, however, is shocking. He seems to think he's got a divine right to be first on the teamsheet, but when it actually comes to putting in some 'hard yards'? Ain't going to happen. Has anybody ever, even once, heard him admit to any flaws with him that haven't just been blamed on somebody else? I don't think I have. Child.

A few fair points about elliot on here.

I agree with the poster (JJ?) who said that it maybe best not to sell him to another SPL club. Last thing that hearts need is a very motivated ex player lining up against us. The way that life tends to throw things up he would either score a hatrick and dance all over the pitch or sent sent off for breaking somebodies legg.

As i've said before i would never close the door on the guy but he needs to make the first move whether its getting EEN to write an article about him being determined to stay or offering to go on loan for 6 months to prove himself to Csaba.

What puzzles me is that if Csaba can motivate Nade to loose weight via exercise, get stewart to control his temper, convince berra to stay, motivate mole- even audry has scored (twice) then how bad must elloit have been to be completly excluded?

#58 JJ, i said for months that the best way to get him going was to instill a sense of injustice in him, for his gaffer to kick him up the backside every day and tell him he wasn't doing enough. maybe get him trying to prove everyone wrong by doing his talking on the pitch. still stand by that.

56

Johnny Jambo,

21/08/2008 15:27:48
#59 VI, dont disagree, that can work, but I think different approaches are needed for different people. Some you need the carrot and some you need the stick. I just dont think he has been getting either. I also think he felt some injustice when he was loaned out to Motherwell a couple of seasons ago instead of getting stuck in and trying to prove himself.

It's sad as I really liked Calumn when he was first breaking through. He's just failed to carry on developing.

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer either. I was at a Player of the Year ceremony around 18 months ago where he picked up the Young POTY award. Back at the table he had to be shown how put together the wooden stand for his trophy. He seemed overly cocksure of himself that night so been headed for a comuppance at least since then I feel.
