Hearts are form team but Hibs fans can swing it

Published Date: 02 December 2008
THE agonies and ecstasy of derby day football gripped former Hibs star Ivan Sproule as he watched the Scottish Cup draw throw up the mouthwatering prospect of yet another Capital showdown – in the company of ex-Jambo Jamie McAllister.
The pair, now starring for English Championship outfit Bristol City, were together in McAllister's home when news of the fourth-round clash between their old clubs flashed up on the television screen.

Immediately, Northern Ireland ace Sproule's mi
nd raced back to the 4-0 mauling Hibs suffered at the hands of their arch-rivals in the Scottish Cup semi-final of 2006, the shiver that ran down his spine almost instantaneously disappearing as he remembered the CIS Insurance Cup victory which followed only months later.

Today, the flying winger believes, fans on both sides of Edinburgh will be recalling those days with similar emotions, supporters of Hibs and Hearts believing that it will be their heroes who emerge victorious from the clash at Easter Road next month.

Sproule said: "I was sitting in Jamie's house watching the draw and I immediately offered him a bet Hibs would win 2-0. Jamie obviously fancies Hearts – but he wouldn't buy it.

"It's a fantastic draw for the city, these are the games you want, against your biggest rivals with all the passion both sets of fans bring to an Edinburgh derby.

"Hearts are obviously the form team at the moment with that great win over Rangers at the weekend but Hibs have also been picking up decent results lately which makes for a cracking tie.

"Realistically, the cups represent the best chance for any side outwith the Old Firm to pick up a piece of silverware every season and I'm sure both Hibs and Hearts will be looking on this game as a chance to knock a major rival out of the competition early."

Sproule knows better than anyone the rollercoaster of emotions such occasions bring, sent off along with Gary Smith as Hearts crushed a vastly under-strength Hibs at Hampden on April 2, 2006, before going on to squeeze past Gretna on penalties in the final to get their hands on the Scottish Cup.

There was a happier outcome, though, when the sides clashed again in the quarter-finals of the CIS Cup at Easter Road only seven months later as a Rob Jones' goal sent Hibs on towards glory as they hammered Kilmarnock 5-1 to lift that particular piece of silverware, their first in 16 years.

He said: "We had a lot of players missing at Hampden that day, guys like Scott Brown, Derek Riordan, Chris Killen, Guillaume Beuzelin, Michael Stewart and Dean Shiels, but even so no-one likes to be beaten like that.

"Being sent off made me feel as if I had let thousands of people down even although we were losing 2-0 at that stage with the game probably beyond us.

"So when we met again in the CIS Cup later that year I went out totally determined to be on the winning side. We managed that with big Rob's goal and went on to have a much better day out at Hampden the following March than we had endured 11 months earlier."

The fact only Steven Fletcher and Chris Hogg remain of the side which succumbed to Hearts the last time they met on Scottish Cup duty means, according to Sproule, that today's team shouldn't allow memories of that day to affect their approach this time round.

He said: "Both sides are totally different today and what happened back then won't have any bearing. Hearts have been going well but I am delighted to see Hibs have found a bit of form and that Mixu Paatelainen appears to have found a settled side.

"In the past few weeks it's been more or less the same 11 starting which is a sign of consistency."

The tie will, of course, be the second derby in the space of barely a week with the Capital outfits due to clash at Tynecastle on January 3 and Sproule is in no doubt what he would do if presented with the chance of winning one or other of the matches.

He said: "The league is important because that's your bread and butter which makes it the No.1 priority. But no two games are the same never mind back-to-back derbies and having been told every time the Scottish Cup came round during my spell with Hibs that this would be our year then I'd take a cup win over the league any day."

At present Hearts, nine points clear of Hibs in third place in the SPL, appear to have the edge, but Sproule believes the fact the cup match is to be played at Easter Road could help swing it in Hibs' favour.

"You always want a home tie no matter who you are playing against in cup competition and I'm sure Hearts, confident as they will be, won't have been overjoyed to see Hibs pulled out of the hat first.

"Having played in front of those fans I know how they can lift you. They'll be just as desperate as the players to win and the atmosphere will be superb, our supporters will back the guys on the pitch 100 per cent and that, I feel, might just prove to be the key."

Sproule and McAllister, though, will find their attention totally focused on their own FA Cup drama before they can even begin to think about their old clubs with Bristol City drawn to travel to meet holders Portsmouth the previous week.

He said: "After losing out to Hull City in the play-offs for the Premier League last season our form has been a bit indifferent but you want a big name in the cup and they don't come any bigger than the current holders.

"We watched Portsmouth draw 2-2 with AC Milan last week in the UEFA Cup so hopefully we can put on just as good a performance as the likes of Kaka and Ronaldinho."

Good point, i have to agree! with no games in Europe there is nothing to distract them. As a hibby even if we did beat Hearts, then Rangers & Celtic. We would lose in the final against Berwick. Its just the Hibs way.

Two derby games eh, superb.

The Yams will have got rid of the expensive players made a few sales to try and save their existence - and then bring in some low grade loan / pseudo signings.

And then normal service will be resumed, they will be back to their shambolic selfs again and then get beat TWICE by Hibs and then disappear into a spiralling free-fall of enternal gloom.

Your doomed YAMS.

Aye very good Sproule!!! The Disney Cup and a narrow win over Hearts on the way, followed by the celebrations being ruined by us at the next derby... that made up for a 4-0 demolition job in the semi final of the Scottish cup and the ignomony of us selling out our allocation and Hibs fans sitting next to wide open spaces and unsold seats... I smell sh....

Confident about this one too as you only need look to the form guide and the derby history of the clubs and then our vastly differing success rates in the competition...

We are the only team to have won the thing outside the OF in ten years and we have done so twice, once beating rangers in the final and the other time beating Hibs 4-0 in the semi, Hibs have won it once in 107 years.

Bit of a mis-match really.

I seem to recall that herts failed to sell all their tickets for the 06 SF.

I also recall quite a few games at ER in the last few years when herts fans came dressed as green seats.
Most memorable was the millennium derby where at least 1,200 wore seat apparel for kick-off, but a further 1,500 had changed into this gear in time for Latapy's wonder 6th.

Bring it on - what a way for herts last ever SC match to be remembered.

Just what the doctor ordered, a couple of good bevy sessions after the New Year hangover. Wouldn't want it any other way!

Both games will be close, form guide goes out the window in derby matches, although I would be prefer to win the cup game and make it 108 in a row.

Not sure what Sproule is on about, the Disney Cup helped them get over the 4-0 drubbing at hampden. Aye right then I'll crack the jokes.

So all this big team wee team gash means nothing. a big team wins trophys every yr.

What a glorious beginning to the New Year the Hibees shall have.

Ramming the Yams, not only once, but twice.

Then watch as they all squirm when the inevitable happens, many a head will have to be sucked out of the sand by Dynorod then.

Of course Hibs will get to the Semi's or maybe the Final and get beat. But at least we will still be in existence in our original form to take part in future cups.

Which my dear beLIEving friends will be the Coup de grâce. And then your glorious history you keep on reminding us off will be nothing more than that,
history.

After all history means nothing, when you are nothing.

Glory, glory to the Hibees.

Lets all laugh at HMFC.

#14/#25 How can you possibly compare a game against Rangers at home or a derby at Easter road - both league games that you get 4 times a year - to a one off, Scottish Cup semi final where the winning team is almost guaranteed to win the cup?!!? Answer - you can't! Correct, Hearts didn't sell all their tickets, possibly 500 or so, Hibs didn't sell about 5,000. For all the talk, there was a lack of backing for your team in the biggest derby in History - wee team, wee support!

Fred agree, both Hearts and Hibs are gash.

We need to slag each other because that is all we have! I would much rather Hibs had won the Scottish Cup if it meant that both teams were challenging for League and Cup every season.

Every derby I go to is 90 minutes of nerves, hoping that Hearts will win, never expecting! I'm glad that we are playing each other it may go down as a game to remember for either team.

The biggest Edinburgh derby of all time, or at least since they last met in the Scottish Cup Final.

And it turned out to be an absolute embarrassment for the Oirish Flairmeisters. Abject humiliation on the park with a 4-0 thrashing, and thousands of empty seats off it.

I seem to remember kevin thomson being injured too and benji being put in for his first ever game in Scotland, so i don't know how yoou yams can count that as one of the best results in your history, i mean seriously come on, it was pretty much a reserve team you were up against, you proved how good you guys actually were in the final.

As for empty seats, i remember there only being a couple of wee gaps in the hibs end, probably because they knew we did not stand a chance with the team we were to put out, i was there, didn't really want to go though.

Not wanting to get dragged into the one-upmanship garbage being spouted by some of the children on here (both sides).

I'm really looking forward to both games, my head tells me Hibs can't win both of them but we live in hope! Should be a couple of cracking games. Only been 2 derbies in the whole of 2008 so 2 in 2 weeks will go down a treat. Rodders better not get any ideas about flogging Fletch when the window opens though, we've seen him sell the family silver before big cup games before...

Ivan Sproule..Northern Ireland "Ace"!!!! meeeehaawww!
No point in reading any more of the article after that!
But I did, and I will happily take the bet he offered McAllister...Hibs to win 2-0 NO CHANCE.
Sproule was a goon as a player and he'd be out of business in a day if he were a bookie...
Hibs to win 2-0 Meeeehhaaaaaawww.
What a choob.
For the serious posters, both games will be close affairs in my view, and home advantage might just be what settles the games.
Hibs to win 2-0 that's so funny.

Jeez, can't believe I just trawled through all the gash on here today and only found a couple of sensible comments.

Yes its a SC tie and we have a pa sh poor record of winning it, winning it boys! this tie is at ER so even if we get beaten at the PBS the week before the advantage will still be to Hibs.

You were the one banging on about how BIG teams are rated by History mate not me. Thats the facts so live with it.

Big team ratings according to Addie

What a joker, theres another straw, grasp it quick. Presumabley, the record attendance over the season was all Hearts fans as well. Good Grief!

Ivan could be back in time for this game. Watch this space....

Hearts fans, why are you all so immature on this website?
80

Iain Bhern,

#40 your right, 'fraid I am getting my days mixed up. Just not used to watching live SPL football on Saturday lunchtimes as it's either a game that doesn't appeal or I'm on my way to Easter Road. My point remains the same though. Having won four games on the trot and playing Rangers you don't expect to see as many empty seats as were evident on Saturday. Especially as Hearts fans are continually blowing off about being the "big" team. Like I said, glass houses and all that!
81

Addie,

02/12/2008 13:25:48
History indeed mate.

History between Hibs and Hearts. Go and read the threads properly mate.

Yes mate, thats the history where Hearts have won the Scottish Cup within the last 200 years.

The history where Hearts have won more derbies etc etc.

You seem a bit obsessed with Queens Park Gordon. Living in the very distant past. You remembering when Hibs last competed in the Scottish CUp with a slim chance of winning?

Mind you, good tactic, might start using it myself.

Lets see, Arthur Duncan scored the winning goal (an OG) in a Scottish Cup final against Rangers in the 80's.

So according to your logic, Hibs really have won the Scottish cup in the last 100 years . Nice one.

Beginning to see where your coming from on this!

The hibs kid,

65 and 66

Did the gaps get bigger as hearts scored more goals???? i thought as much, thats were you probably judged the whole empty seats malarky on.There was still a load of us there. As i said a lot of hibs fans didnt go because of the team we were gonna be putting out, but then again i still believe we managed a massive crowd, it was more than 3/4 full at our end anyway, not bad for a team that really didn't stand a chance.

I also think you will win the cup dearby again only because we are actually jinxed in the competition and not because yous are a great team(far far far from it)so yes it will be 108 109 110 111 years in a row etc, shame but thats just the way it is, we have had good enough teams to win it in the past and it's just not happening.

I was at the game and there were a few hundred empty seats.
However, taking into account the time of year, the rising unemployment, I suggest we call it a bumper crowd.
By the way, what was the attendance for the last Hibs v Rangers game?

Depends. You have me at a disadvantage. You'd have to reveal your true identity. Mind you, being a Jambo I can understand why youd be to embarrased to use you real name.

The jamboys only seem to read half a story..

hibs were without several first teamers at hampden..9 men on the pitch and it was a rout...
1 week later at easter rd when full strength team hibs won 2-1 when benji ran up the park after his winner.

Its all about what happens on the day.remember bring the 107 banners to the game(thats if you can sell yer tickets..empty maroon seats at tynie every week at the moment..) cause we know who 1 0-7 ...

You Hibby's need to chill out.

Looking forward to the game... I personally think Hibs will beat us and get pumped off St Johnstone in the next round and as usual some Hibs fans will still be happy at this because they knocked Hearts out.

Ambition is the key

See all you unemployed YAMS you should be ordered to go collect shopping trolly's from the rivers.
And wipe dogs dirt from the parks. because you come on the EEN Forum at the back of three 1-0 steals and a 2-1 victory against a disgraceful performance from rangers.
now go pay your teams wages.

Its quite funny reading these posts. The last time i saw many worried hobo's in the one location the soup kitchens were closing.

Hibs genuine fans will no doubt realise that hearts will be the favourites to win the tie: better players, better manager, fans who know how to support their team without smashing up busses or attacking random people.

The question that needs to be asked is: Will the new year derby be mixu's last game or will it be a week later?

i find it funny that the hoobs fans excuse of not going to the semi was because they knew the squad was weak due to the lack of superstars (hhhmmmmmmph ooops dribbled a bit of wee there), if this is the real reason then why even bother to turn up at the leith Nou Tramp stadium at all for the home games, or was it because there are that many SC semi finals against your biggest and oldest rivals that you can be choosey as to which ones you want to attend!
