Hearts' cup defeat leaves Laszlo looking at league

THE league campaign may well have been Csaba Laszlo's main concern when he first arrived at Tynecastle – for now it's his only one after watching his side crash out of the Co-Operative Insurance Cup.

The home side left the field to a chorus of boos when two saved penalties from Lee Wallace and David Obua sent First Division Airdrie United into the next round after 120 minutes of open play had passed without a single goal.

The Hearts manager in
sisted that his side must rediscover their touch in front of goal against Hamilton this weekend if they are to prevent a drama from turning into a crisis.

The home side, who this week loaned Calum Elliot to Livingston, clearly carry little threat in the final third of the field and passed up a number of chances against Kenny Black's well-organised Diamonds, who played out the final minutes with ten men after Kevin McDonald was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Admittedly the visitors' main threat came by way of the counter attack but they were wrongly denied a first-half goal when referee Eddie Smith ruled that Paul di Giacomo's 30-yard effort had not crossed the line after it had bounced down off the underside of the bar and their defence mopped up everything that Hearts could throw at them.

Hearts could have no complaints about the result but Laszlo admitted there had been disappointment and disbelief in the dressing room after the match.

"Everyone is disappointed. You cannot only play good football, you have also got to score goals and we did not do that.

"If you do not score and the game goes to penalty kicks then the chances of you winning are 50-50 and it is like a lottery.

"We lost the lottery and we are out, I am upset for the people who have come to Tynecastle to watch us and wanted to celebrate a victory with the team.

"It is time to wake up. It is not okay if you do not fight, if you do not give 200 per cent.

"We are out so we must concentrate on the Scottish Cup and on the league campaign instead and we must take the points against Hamilton this weekend.

"We will see another team out there this weekend, not in terms of the people playing but in the way that they are playing and from their confidence."

Despite international clearance coming through yesterday, it was too late for goalkeeper Janos Balogh to make it into the Hearts squad, Marian Kello retaining his place between the sticks and Jamie MacDonald taking the place on the bench.

The Jambos had an early chance to open their account when Larry Kingston's corner in four minutes found Christos Karipidis in space in the middle of the box but the big Greek couldn't connect with the ball.

Former Kilmarnock striker Di Giacomo was causing a real nuisance and his persistence saw him win a corner off Christophe Berra just a few minutes later. It was taken by Steven McDougall and it was a good one, finding its way through to Stephen McKenna but his header looped just over Kello's bar.

While Hearts were creating chances, they were finding it difficult to get past the Diamonds' well-organised defenders who again frustrated their hosts when a ball over the top from Karipidis was collected by Kingston. He in turn diverted it into the path of Saul Mikoliunas but unfortunately for the home crowd, the Lithuanian's ball into the box, where David Obua, Michael Stewart and Jamie Mole were lurking, was well cut out by David Nixon.

With just under half an hour gone Kello pulled off a brilliant block from Di Giacomo from 12 yards out when the rest of the Hearts defence looked to have fallen asleep and they were saved again three minutes before the break when Di Giacomo again showed his class only to be denied by the referee.

His thunderous shot from fully 30 yards beat Kello all ends up and, when it came off the underside of the crossbar and bounced away, it looked as though it had crossed the line in the process. But Eddie Smith didn't agree and waved play on with his far side assistant still racing down his line to catch up with play.

The hush that greeted the crashing shot from the Hearts supporters suggested the majority thought it had crossed the line.

At the other end Mole got the slightest of touches on a cross from Kingston and it would have been enough to take it into the net had it not been for the outstretched hand of Stephen Robertson, who stopped it almost on the line with his fingertips and a defender was on hand to clear it before Obua could tap the loose ball home.

Laszlo tried to change things around with 69 minutes gone when he replaced Kingston with Audrius Ksanavicius, a decision which was greeted with a chorus of boos as the midfielder left the field. He was none too impressed by the decision either and wagged his finger in Laszlo's face as he made his way back into the dug out, the Hearts boss ushering his midfielder away with a wave of his hand.

With 15 minutes remaining Mikoliunas found himself with a glorious opportunity when in space just a couple of yards out but somehow managed to send his effort past the post rather than inside it.

It was left to Airdrie keeper Robertson to single-handedly consign Hearts to defeat with two top-drawer blocks in the dying minutes of extra time.

The Diamonds stopper reacted like a flash of lightning to smother a snapshot from Deividas Cesnauskis from the edge of the box, then brilliantly palmed away a powerful effort from Christian Nade and was no doubt relieved when Stewart could only turn the rebound over the bar from close range to send the match to spot-kicks. Black, who saw Simon Lynch, Marc Smyth, Mathew Hazley and Scott McLaughlin successfully convert from 12 yards and Karipidis, Eggert Jonsson and Stewart hit back for Hearts, was delighted by the part his keeper played in the victory and insisted that he had believed all along that Robertson was capable of denying Hearts from the spot.

He said: "Our keeper had two or three fantastic saves in normal time as well as extra-time, and I fancied him to save one during the penalty shoot-out. What he lacks in size he more than makes up for and I think that he is one of the best shot-stoppers in our division.

"He will probably get a lot of plaudits for his performance and he fully deserves them. I believe that the effort in the first half from Di Giacomo was a yard over the line but I thought that on effort alone we deserved to take it to penalties at least, but you are always worried because these things sometimes don't pan out the way that you hope they will.

"I was actually quite relaxed before the penalties. I have been fortunate enough over the years though with Airdrie against Hearts that I managed to beat them in the Scottish Cup semi-final a few years back.

"I am delighted for everyone connected with the club and for the players for the effort that they put in to get the result."

4-5-1 at home to Airdrie, what do you expect? A centre half playing in midfield, a midfielder playing at right back, andy driver (one of our most direct players) not in the squad???? Just when it was beginning to look like we had someone who would pick a team themselves??
Is it too difficult - play your best players in thier natural positions, keep them fit, if they play well and win games - play them again. If they dont perform- give someone else a chance, if they aren't fit - dont play them! Why change the team around every game, we are not playing in europe, so the squad shouldn't need rested?

hate to say it, same old story for hearts this year

#3 I dont think its meddling from Mad Vald for the out of positions. I was really surprised that Kari was still in the midfield role as opposed to Right Back though. Swapping these two would have made more sense. Still need another striker. I dont think the 4-5-1 is any good and changing to a 4-4-2 with a young striker up front with Mole might be the answer until Nade is fit (or when Greggs goes bust) or Gary Glen. Perhaps give Kostadinov a couple of games might do the trick.

A defender in midfield, a midfield player at right back, and just one striker against First Division opposition.
Back to the drawing board Csaba/Vlad.

Getting tired of Weegie Bigots 28/08/2008 12:49:43
So sick of these "weegies" who come on here and monopolise the threads.

Please Mr Scotsman/EEN set up a virtual playground where they can take their taunts and occasional bigotry that escapes the prefect and let them have a go at each other elsewhere.

Non supporters of the ugly sisters are tired and bored with the arrogance and condescending nature of the posts.

When Hibs win and Hearts lose there's a good level of insult and banter, when the opposite is true there's a similar reaction.

But when that lot get going....yawn...it kills off any debate and interesting comment.

I hate bigotry. I hate the tribal/implied violence of the Ugly Sisters.

I remember, many years ago, (sooks on a Werthers Original)I invited a couple of work colleagues up to Edinburgh for New Year. Due to the Hearts being in a lower division than the Green Leith types we played Airdrie on NYD.

2-0 up and 80 mins on the clock one of them turned to me and said, "Brilliant atmosphere, magic crowd, and WE'RE going to win."

I cautioned him.

Sure enough Airdrie got 3 in the last 10 and we lost 3-2.

My pals couldn't believe that I wasn't heartbroken (no pun intended).

"That's how it is with the Hearts", I said.

It's good to see that teams are now coming to Tynecastle with their defences packed. Shows that the fortress is being rebuilt.

We just need more guile.

Also pleased that neddie boy won't be joining us, talented player, but not a Hearts player.

Same old, same old, lets just hope that Berra doesn't get sold. He may well be on his way before Monday night.

Stay Chris and build a new legend.

We are a legend, not for winning everything but for just being the Hearts. We fight in wars, we snatch Albert Kidd from the jaws of victory but I wouldn't swap them for a green or blue scarf any day.

Just hate the nastiness.

Would prefer wit and originality which the OF never have.

As for "Shabba" saying that a different team will be on the park on Saturday, that's great. May be the same faces but the attitude will be different, not 200%, because that can't mathematically exist, but better.

I'm on the verge of getting a ticket again after my self imposed boycott at the start of last season.

I think that we're heading in the right direction and at long last there is some reality in the thinking behind the team.

Makes me think of big Drew Busby....the last player to score for Third Lanark before they collapsed (pub quiz question if ever I saw one), we got him from Airdrie.

Need a sniffer who can convert.

Please Vlad, just let "Shabba" get one befroe Monday night.

Not too concerned about the result, at least we didnt get 4 goals stuck past us in open play, unlike our smaller rivals.

More concerned about the bust up between shaba and larry...WTF is going on there?

As long as we can keep the good results in the league coming this weekend, then I'll be happy.

Both Edinburgh teams out to poor quality 1st division opposition...says it all really.

One up front against the wee boys would appear to be the way forward with Vlad. He really must know absolutely nothing about how to play and win games.

Maybe he should have faxed Csaba last night when it went to penalties to change the keeper again.

F off Vlad you are making a mockery of Hearts

busbyfh,

Negatives I'm afraid...

1. Am I the only person that hates short run ups to penalty kicks ? Watch Euro games etc. - most the missed penalties are very short run ups - it's been the same for years. As soon as Obua took two steps back from the spot the writing was on the wall. Mind you - 6,000 people slapped their collective foreheads when we all saw that Obua was put forward for the fifth kick - After 5 diabolical attempts at shots during the game it was odds on he would miss.
2. I'm afraid that Casbah last night commited his first team driven mistake (we all make them). Taking Miko off was daft - he was playing well.Bringing on Chesne was correct - but it should have been Obua that was taken off. Miko and Chesne on either flank would have been a huge difference instead of playing the new guy who was out on his feet with 20 minutes left. Casbah also needs to tell DO to stop wandering as much and how to mark his man. Simply put - Obua needs to adapt to this different style of play IN THE RESERVES to start with - Last night he was as bad as miko at his worst. DO has talent , but we cannot play him just now as last night in the second half especially it was like a man short. The poor devil also needs his confidence built up after a shooting exhibition that defied belief. He will come good - but Casbah ......when he is ready.
3. Once again I state - posession football is great when it works but we play it too slowly. The build up is fine but just when we are supposed to burst into life and attack with pace - we just pass it sideways again. URGENCY is required every now and then. Posession football requires patience BUT ALSO SPORADIC FORWARD MOVEMENT WITH PACE.
4. WE NEED A STRIKER ! What's the betting Larrye could be gone by Monday - He is not enjoying himself right now - body language etc and is playing as bad as anyone.

Ah well - Hamilton on Saturday - Killie not to win and the ugly sisters to draw - If we win - top of the league. Off to by the tickets ,

Agree with your post. I personally wouldn’t be too fussed if Larry went. He hasn’t produced the goods for a while and never seems to give maximum effort as far as I’m concerned.

Few positives from last night, believe it or not. I thought Kello looked good. Couldn’t tell on Sat as he had virtually nothing to do but last night he pulled off a cracking save and commanded his box very well. He doesn’t seem to be hesitant to come out for the ball either, unlike Banks for example

For all the complaining about Karapidis playing in midfield, I actually think he plays there quite well. Maybe it’s just me.

Chesney. The best he’s played in ages. I’m his harshest critic but he was great last night. Why doesn’t he play like that all the time?

Negatives? I really don’t have the time!!!

I really thought this 4-5-1 would fade under Csaba... lack of option may be a factor but Mole and a 60-70mins Nade up front together would be better than this 4-5-1... or maybe the players just can't adapt to it?

Karypidis as a defender I don't have a great issue with but as a holding midfielder? Ruben should be in there or Eggy but not Karypidis. Playing players out of position isn't playing to the strengths they have Csaba - sort it out!

Thanks #38

We laugh, I cried when we beat Gretna on pens, turned to the old boy next me and he was in a similar state of "getting in touch with his feminine side".

A man 3 rows in front collapsed and got attention immediately from the paramedics. I hope he was OK, it's the unfortunate abiding memory from the game.

That, and Brooks Mileson clapping the Hearts fans on his tour of the perimeter.

Just over 12 months later I was lucky enough to know someone connected with the Rollng Stones and was given a ticket at Hampden to see them. Right next to the presentation area. When they did the extending stage bit and played 30 ft in front of the podium I was dancing to "Honky Tonk Women", watching Keith kick his malfunctioning amp but all I could think of was Elvis raising the Scottish Cup in front of 40,000 (yes 40,000) Hearts fans the year before.

Sad really, I'll get me coat........

It matters more to us when we win because it doesn't happen as often as we would like.

If Hobbits FC won the cup! My God! there would be 20,000 people out in London Road...maybe.

A once in a century event.

More power to emotion, more power to the people who I met at the Aberdeen final who'd come from Canada and New Zealand to see us win something.

That's why the Hearts are a great club.

49

Jamtastik,

Its funny that some fans forget how bad their team has done when another team does equaly as bad.

Hearts are out - good luck to airdrie, we didnt deserve to go through.
Hibs are out - good luck to morton, hibs didnt deserve to go through.

As for bigkennybluenose, his comments are just a smokescreen to make us forget his team were dumped out of the CL by kaunus..

If rangers lose on sunday i wont expect to see kids like him on the forum until they think everyone has forgotten and he'll be on with his 'we are the best' guff.

Celtic will win the title again imo and rangers will probably be second, but the thrill of being above everyone else will be dulled by the fact that his teams greatest rivals not only finish above his team, but are in the competition that vlads other team knocked his out of.

British Transport Police release details of all football related arrests over the last year:

"Fans from seven SPL clubs were arrested: Rangers, Dundee United,
Motherwell, Celtic, Hearts, Aberdeen and Hibernian, as well as fans from
Cowdenbeath, Hamilton Academicals, Dundee, the Highland League's,
Clachnacuddin, and supporters of Chelsea, Manchester United, Scotland
and Northern Ireland.

Two Chelsea fans were arrested for possession of drugs, Manchester
United appear on the list as one of their fans was arrested for Breach
of the Peace at Motherwell Railway Station. The Cowdenbeath fan was
arrested for Indecent Assault, perhaps the most serious incident during
the season.

Celtic, Motherwell, and Hearts each had four fans arrested during the
season, Aberdeen and Hibs had three. Dundee United were the second
highest offenders with six arrests, while an incredible 30 Rangers fans
were arrested, almost half of the season's total for all clubs. These
figures do not include those arrested at the Manchester riot in May,
which British Transport Police refer to in their press release"

They're all bad people.

And it's no surprise to see who tops the list.

Just ask people in Manchester.

Scottish reputation ruined for 20 years.

If only the Premier League would take them. then we could get back to football, which is all it's really about.

Not Irish Republicanism, right wing Unionism, or any other bile which spouts forth from the mouths of Scotland's "Ambassadors".

That said, at least Celtic are welcome everywhere.

And I'm not a fan of them, seeing them at Tynecastle giving the Republican bit "large".

They've got a republic, so let them go and enjoy it.

Nothing worse than 400 year old vendettas messing up football.

Its been the done thing since the 60's , thats when the jealousy act came into force, Hearts have always been and always will be miles behind HIBERNIAN for creativity, among many many other things, HIBERNIAN had the glamour games against the likes of Liverpool, Leeds United, barca, naples, real, inter,
I could go on for days naming such glamour games,
And they were all important games, not friendly's,

Just ask your dad's and your gandads,

HOW MUCH THE GORGIE HEARTS WERE ENVIOUS OF HIBERNIAN FC..

I wasn't at the game but was on Saturday and I can't understand this one up front against a team with everyone behind the ball. They did it over and over again last season to the bemusement of the players and fans and with shocking results and its so disappointing that Laszlo is doing the same.

Yes we need strikers but even without Tullberg there's Mole, Nade, Glen and Makela - can we not play 2 at home??

More mediocrity is in store unless there is a big change in the approach to games and the tactis. This team is creating nothing in the final third.

Mind you, have we EVER beaten Airdrie in a cup? I really wish they had died off when they went out the league, coming back in a new incarnation was always going to be bad news for Hearts. Whenever I think of that "ee eye oh ee eye oh" chant I associate it with the Jambos getting knocked out the cup :(

Well done to Kenny Black though, a great Jambo hero.

Perhaps the jambos on this site will now temper their supposed superiority and learn a little humility.

After all they said yesterday, they must now realise how ridiculous they are.

Pedantic Hobo...lol

I'm not as funny as the comedians on the board at E Road. Cash filled pockets, no money to fund a failing manager.

Methinks the axe is hovering over the Mixu head.

Not long now!!!

i think some go down the rangers way by quoting history & to be honest hearts history is better with more games won and longer periods of superiority, but both edinburgh teams have to focus on the fact they are both having a nightmare start to the season and unless they address their own issues and stop putting one another down then both teams are going to be in the bottom 6.

Need to look to the future and not argue about the past.

#68 Not meant that way.

I was mereley pointing out that instead of squabbling about things that have happened constructive discussions about what we hope will happen would be better.
I think that we do need to pull our socks up a bit and we will win on saturday, the league result was a little kick that hopefully we needed to strengthen the resolve.

We do desperatly need a striker though that is apparent and as the transfer window is still open hopefully we can get one..tullberg hasn't played but its been reported hes not a goalscorer i think...need a penalty box player imo

Took mate to game who is a jambo but not been there for a while... He noted that David Obua was the worst he has seen play for Hearts!

It's hard to believe but he has a worse first touch than Makela.

Hearts were rank and deserved to get booed off the park.

Playing Eggert at RB, Kari in CM an a 4-5-1 at home shows Csaba does not have the tactical skill he lets us think he has!

We were poor against Murderwell, lucky against St Midden and completely found out against Airdie.

Total shambles.

I wonder if these boards were available in 1986 there would have been as many crazed lunatics, ranting how McDonald must go and Robertson was no use and Clark was too old, once Montrose stuck 2 past us and knocked us out at exactly the same stage?
Knee jerk doesn't go half way to describing it.
A poor team does not create 24 chances even when it is not playing well or to its full potential.
Performance in the final 3rd is letting this side down badly, it has in the past and its going to again without some investment in a decent striker.

Is that reasoning applying to FFFHibs ? - 8 "foreigners" entered the fray on Wednesday for you lot .
Weren't you there to count them ?
81

what a chancer,

in the rough 28/08/2008 18:39:48
so it just goes to show the midfield cant hold thier position and take the ball forward for the strikers to score ,are the strikers getting quality chances maybe not to often, the manager was correct we should have the game won earlier, but he knows now he is trying to get quality out of players who arent capable to produce ,i still say they have all peaked and have leveled out its just that we dont want to admit it.they are no better as proved last night ,im sure john collins could have gave us a better squad at a quarter of the price.

and i would also like to say to all jambos that if you were at the game last night you clearly would have seen that we were bye far the better team and until he was taken off miko was the only player that was showen any passion whatsoever so lets not get carried away its quite clear that theres 2 many people on this site who dont even know where gorgie is never mind about hearts

Defeat.

We'll live.

Talk of new players, more than "Iron Rod" is investing in down the end of Albert St. Mind you, he's probably got the new "green" Brazil working out on the playing fields of Prestonpans as we speak.

Ho hum...Hamilton.

We'll know by 5 PM on Sat if we have team to look forward to, or a team to dread listening to on the radio as matches unfold.

Nothing changes, except the Trolls names.

Hibs Ex-player indeed.......and Im Donald "big ears" Ford. Mind you he might be Paul Hartley....3 in the semi..lol

No insult meant Donald....but yer lugs were built for a 7 ft man when you were 5"10 at best heading the winner against Rangers in the replay.

jings 28/08/2008 21:49:39
i wish we had john hughes as manager, least he would give them a verbal and send them on thier way.if you cant deliver a decent ball to the forward line then the will never score,we keep emplying one season wonders ,can we not except they have peaked and they got the contract they wanted in the hipper,do they really care where hearts end up,i doubt it and it hurts .
87

what a chancer,

obvious 28/08/2008 21:56:19
theirs no money left in the pocket, all gone in wages to players already ,this manager is feared to play the youngsters and the squad of experienced ones cant deliver, this guy will fall because they cant improve ,shaggy wanted to play the youngsters but he was told to pick the team but not allowed to pick the squad i feel this system was in op last night.

Too many fans pressing the panic buttons I feel. So, we got knocked out the diddy cup...ok, we shouldn't have but we did.
We can all go back and forward over whether Vlad is still pulling the strings and every second poster will come on to tell us his cousins, best friends, dentists high school sweetheart knows Berra and he said this and that.....blah blah blah.
No-one really knows whats going on. Who's to say Vlad has told Csaba "Right, I'm not sanctioning anymore money for transfer fees but here's a list of Kaunas players you can have on loan. Tell me who you want"
As i posted on another thread, if 7 or 8 games from now kaunas players are playing rotten and still getting picked...we'll know for sure Csaba doesn't have autonomy.
I think a lot of folk forget last season we were garbage and expect a new manager to come in and emulate Burleys start. Last seasons form would have seen us sitting now on 0 points from 9 and we're currently sitting on 6. I'll give Hearts and Csaba some time to show me we're heading in a better direction before I start ranting and raving....and I think a few jambos should follow suit.
