Mixu hopes to recruit striker and keeper

Published Date: 28 August 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today revealed he hopes to sign a striker and goalkeeper before the transfer window closes on Monday – but admitted the deals could go down to the midnight deadline.
Frantic negotiations are going on behind the scenes in a bid to secure the new arrivals who would join summer signings David van Zanten, Fabian Yantorno, Steven Thicot, Joe Keenan and Steve Pinau in Paatelainen's squad.

While agreeing the move to put the deadline back to September 1, and thereby avoiding a bureaucratic nightmare of the transfer window closing on a Sunday night, will help, Paatelainen believes he might require every minute of the extension to push his proposed deals through.

He said: "I'm still hoping to add one striker and a goalkeeper by midnight on Monday but we will have to wait and see.

"There are talks going on non-stop all the time. The 24-hour delay won't make a massive difference but it will help as it obviously gives us another day and I hope that makes all the difference.

"Even with the extra time it might go right down to the wire, these things often do as usually there's a chain reaction, one move somewhere starts everything off."

Paatelainen declined to reveal who his No.1 targets in both positions might be.

While battling to bring those final signings in, Paatelainen also has the task of lifting his players for Saturday's SPL clash with Motherwell following their shock Co-operative Insurance Cup exit at the hands of Morton.

Paatelainen may be angry at the decisions by referee Iain Brines which he felt helped contribute to Hibs downfall but today he insisted he was delighted with his team's performance even if they did scorn a succession of openings.

He said: "I was really happy with the performance, things are starting to fall into place. There will be hiccups as well but as long as the trend is upwards, our performances keep improving although obviously you need the results to go with them."

Paatelainen expects both goalkeeper Andy McNeil and defender Chris Hogg to be fit for Saturday after the pair suffered a touch of concussion following clashes during the Morton defeat while striker Colin Nish should also recover from the "dead leg" which forced him to come off.

Meanwhile, Paatelainen will be prepared to give skipper Rob Jones and winger Alan O'Brien, who both missed Tuesday night's match with knee injuries, every chance to prove their fitness.

The pair have been receiving intensive treatment and Paatelainen said: "They are getting better, I don't know if they will be fit enough but we'll even wait to Saturday morning for them."

Paatelainen was given further food for thought ahead of the weekend having taken in yesterday's 3-0 reserve win over Falkirk in which Ross Campbell scored twice while both Pinau and Yantorno played the full 90 minutes.

worrying that mixu is happy with the performance against Morton, we were mince up until we scored which was the 80th min, he should surely be demanding more from his players!

Jim W,

28/08/2008 12:11:25
#3, Hibs outshot Morton 21-7 in regulation time. They passed the ball about a lot better than people were expecting under Mixu as well. The issue was the chances didn't go in. All in all if you take away the result which naturally clouds everything else it was a decent performance and a decent game imo.

hibs should go for Russell & Masterton as they can score goals, but maybe hard to judge as their latest goals were against a p*sh team.

Away and hide.

You should maybe go for the Airdrie defence, seeing as how they well and truly pumped you, eh? But yes, hard to judge as they were playing against a non-existent, p1shy midefield and strike force.

Bit hard to argue with that Hallucinist. What comes around......

everton-jambo I'm afraid you appear to have a very twisted idea of banter. I find accusations of people being drug addicts offencive, not funny! Banter is one thing but that's not what you are engaging in.

For your information Niemi signing for Hibs is plausible although unlikely given the wage he would want. He is an ex international team mate of Mixu and as far as I'm aware they keep in touch regularly. As for Riordan, personally I don't want the wee ned at Hibs unless he cleans up his off pitch behaviour. Banks I'd not object to, but he has one thing in common with Niemi other than Hearts, he wants a player/coach position and as we already have a goalkeeping coach it's not going to happen.

Mind you, even after that I'm struggling
43

Iain Bhern,

28/08/2008 13:44:34
#41 babylou, well he calls himself a coach but on the evidence of the last two seasons I'm not impressed. Since all our goalies seem to make the same basic errors that points to poor coaching in my book. I'd shed no tears if he were to leave.

British transport Police released details of their football related arrests over the last year:

Fans from seven SPL clubs were arrested: Rangers, Dundee United,
Motherwell, Celtic, Hearts, Aberdeen and Hibernian, as well as fans from
Cowdenbeath, Hamilton Academicals, Dundee, the Highland League's,
Clachnacuddin, and supporters of Chelsea, Manchester United, Scotland
and Northern Ireland.

Two Chelsea fans were arrested for possession of drugs, Manchester
United appear on the list as one of their fans was arrested for Breach
of the Peace at Motherwell Railway Station. The Cowdenbeath fan was
arrested for Indecent Assault, perhaps the most serious incident during
the season.

Celtic, Motherwell, and Hearts each had four fans arrested during the
season, Aberdeen and Hibs had three. Dundee United were the second
highest offenders with six arrests, while an incredible 30 Rangers fans
were arrested, almost half of the season's total for all clubs. These
figures do not include those arrested at the Manchester riot in May,
which British Transport Police refer to in their press release.

53

Ex-Pat Stanton,

everton Jambo, You really are a wee bit simple aren't you. I would whole heartidly suggest you head off to Jaes Thins or Waterstons (your case officer knows where to find one), go inside, It's Ok they wont judge you for being a ned, and steal a copy of the dictionary. You can then learn to read properly and when you get to B (It's right near the front of the book) you'll find the word Bigot, (that's what you are if you say all Hibs fans celebrate the death of Wallet Mercer) memorise the definition... This is the clever bit coming up...

Then Jam the book up yer manky unwashed kyber!
54

Iain Bhern,

#48, Our keepers do well enough as shot stoppers and make some amazing saves. However an awful lot of the goals we have lost have come from set pieces. Poor positioning from the keeper and defensive wall not set up correctly are two of the most common errors. Each of our keepers seem to be making the self same mistakes and therefore the lowest common denominator has to be the man who is coaching them.

Its been the done thing since the 60's , thats when the jealousy act came into force, Hearts have always been and always will be miles behind HIBERNIAN for creativity, among many many other things, HIBERNIAN had the glamour games against the likes of Liverpool, Leeds United, barca, naples, real, inter,
I could go on for days naming such glamour games,
And they were all important games, not friendly's,
