ADJUSTING to a peripheral role with Hearts has left Ruben Palazuelos decidedly frustrated, so much so that he will consider leaving Tynecastle if his personal circumstances don't change.
Tonight's Co-operative Insurance Cup meeting with First Division Airdrie United assumes great significance for the Spaniard. In short, it's his chance to impress manager Csaba Laszlo.

Hearts are expected to utilise their squad strength in a compet
ition often considered the lesser of Scotland's major three, allowing the likes of Palazuelos and similarly inactive colleagues like Eggert Jonsson, Deividas Cesnauskis and Christian Nade valuable game time.

The rarity of the opportunity must be overlooked if those on the field are to convince Laszlo of their worth. Both Palazuelos and Jonsson have found themselves relegated to substitute roles in favour of Christos Karipidis this season and it must be said that the Greek's performances have been nothing other than assured in an unfamiliar holding midfield berth.

However, that is of no consolation to those watching from the sidelines. Palazuelos became accustomed to being a first-team regular with 34 appearances for Hearts last season but he has yet to leave the technical area since the new campaign started. Continually sitting on the bench is upsetting the player, who spoke to the Evening News to outline the need for change one way or another.

"I like Hearts, I like Edinburgh, I'm very happy here. But I'm a professional footballer and I want to play," he said. "If it's not possible for me to play here and I'm getting nothing, maybe I can speak with another team and go. I need to play. I just hope the situation changes after a few more games.

"It's difficult because I haven't played for the last three games. I was suspended for the Motherwell match but I haven't been involved in the other two. I'm not happy, that's normal. The season is very long and there are plenty games to come.

"I hope to play tonight, I feel it's possible and I want to play well. Normally there would be four or five changes for a game like this because the season is so long and players who played the last three games will need to recover. I will wait to see the team.

"I feel good, although not playing is a problem. I'm not in the starting 11 but this is normal because the team has been good in the last three games. Two wins in three games is a good start. However, I don't understand why I haven't played at all. The decision is for the manager. I am doing training and more training and I feel a little bit angry.

"I like this manager, Csaba Laszlo. He speaks with the players, training is always with the ball and his style is good for me. It's a surprise that I haven't played at all, not even 20 or 30 I minutes.

"For now, my head is only thinking about Hearts. This is a big game. Maybe the people say it's an easy game because we play Airdrie and they are in the First Division, but it's a big game for me and a big game for Hearts. It's important to get to the next round."

It could be argued that tonight's encounter is more significant for Palazuelos than his club. A midweek cup tie at home to lower league opponents provides the chance for Laszlo to indulge in some moderate experimentation, particularly in midfield where Karipidis and Michael Stewart are expected to sit out.

"Eggert Jonsson is making good development. In the future we will give him more chances, maybe even at right-back," said Laszlo. "Ruben is a good football player who played a little bit more last year. At the moment, there is competition and he must work to come in the team. Tonight he has a 100 per cent chance to play."

Ironically, one of Palazuelos' most impressive early performances in maroon came in tonight's competition, the CIS Insurance Cup as was its previous guise. Against Dunfermline at Tynecastle last September, he replaced Stewart after 29 minutes and offered an intelligent array of passing and movement throughout the remainder of normal time and extra-time as Hearts laboured before eventually securing a 4-1 victory.

It was a night which properly indicated the player's potential, the catalyst for him later becoming a mainstay of the side under Stephen Frail.

"It's like last season again," recalled Palazuelos. "At the start, I hardly played for two months. Then I played a little and then more and stayed in the team. It's only three games into the season but I need to play from the start. When I don't play my confidence is less. I'm a professional so when I don't play I do more training.

"I haven't spoken to the manager. There is no need. The manager sees me training and he can see what I do. When I play I am happy but I don't need to speak with the manager. If I can play from the start tonight it gives me a chance. If I play well and the team wins, it's important for me and Hearts because the manager will see my confidence. Maybe then I can start the next game.

"I respect the manager and the other players because we have more players who have a situation like me. They haven't played at all and have not even been on the bench. The team is playing well but if I get a chance tonight I want to play well and stay in the team."

Palazuelos could never be accused of being a selfish footballer, but tonight he looks after number one in the hope of reclaiming his place at Hearts.

I rate Ruben highly, and I think that he or Jonsson should be occupying the holding role infront of the back four well in front of Calamity-Karapidis.

But what I dont like is Ruben bumping his gums after 3 games, 1 of which he was suspended, hitting out with the old 'play me or I'll leave' chestnut.

I hope he proves me right tonight, as I hate Karapidis, he is a bomb scare

I think Ruben can think himself unfortunate not to be playing. Of course he was suspended for the first game and you have to admit that Karipidis has done very well and gives that little bit more height and strength in midfield.

However, I would not like to see Ruben leave and hope he does well tonight.

The most pleasing thing about this article is that Lazlo mentions a possibility of Jonsson playing at RB. I have been calling for this for almost a year including on here yesterday. It looks like he is down the pecking order for a midfield start but is a very talented player and with a little time would make a cracking RB in my opinion.

Lazlo is finally talking about quality and not quantity and I don't think he will be happy until we have 10 outfield players that are first and foremost good technically and comfortable with the ball at their feet. To achieve this we need a new RB and LB.

I hope Jonsson can do a job at RB after all the pressure to play him there.

I too would like to see both Jonsson and Ruben with places in the team and hopefully when Karapidis gets his saught after move back to greece then we may well see Ruben in the sitting role and Jonsson as RB.

Are we not being a little harsh on Robbie and Thomsonn though... i await being slaughtered here but I want to give Robbie a chance to prove himself under Csaba like the others have been given.

I agree about Robbie #3

Thomson hasn't put a foot wrong in the first 3 games, so if its not broke dont fix it

Wallace too has looked better than last season.

For me personally, I'd put Karapidis at right-back and slot Ruben into the holding midfield role.

Jonsson will get his chance, but Ruben is a more accomplished player than him just now.

The main concern is getting a settled keeper!

Very early for him to be talking about leaving if he doesn't get to play, but lets put that down to journalistic licence...

Yeah, he was suspended for the first game, and the manager is happy with the perfomances of the guy who replaced him - tough, that's how football (should) work, once you're in the team you stay there as long as you're playing well. Tonights Rubens chance to prove to Csaba what he can do - if he goes out and plays a stormer, that makes the decision that bit harder for the next game.
All very simple.

Think Jonsson would be good at right back and would definately give us more than Thompson who, for me is not up to standard. Am surprised that Ruben is not getting a look in- i think he covers the field well, even in a holding role.

#1. Just what exactly are you basing your criticism of Karipidis on? Obviously not from any of this season's games!

I think we have to get back to the notion that if someone plays well then they keep their place.Karipidis has done everything asked of him so far,we all have our own ideas on selection but tinkering with the team for no reason has to stop. When you read the story he doesnt criticise the manager and in fact knows his chance will come over the season.

I agree karapidid has done well and we should not tinker too much.

Karapidis at RB though? not if he plays like he did last season there... he was way worse than Robbie at RB.

*4 - Thomson has looked at best shaky and at times sloppy.

The truth of the matter is that neither Thomson nor Neilson are good enough. Karipidis has played there unconvincingly in the past and I dont think Jonsson has the attacking instincts to play there either

Concur with the majority, Palazuelos would be my no.1 choice for the holding role, but Csaba see's these guys every day, we dont, Csaba knows more than me for sure and in Csaba I trust.
Karipidis is limited in what he can do in there but the defense looks wobbly at times, perhaps Csaba is giving them extra insurance.

The good thing is that every posters opinion is IMO a 'fair shout' therein demonstrating CSABA's influence in just 50 DAYS!! Who would have thought that we could have improved(apart from me & few others!!!) as much with the same group of players. The competition for places will catalyst further improvement.

We all know a natural goalscorer is required but hopefully Mole continues to improve,Nade gets fit & demonstrates his undoubted ability & young gary Glen continues to develop without rediculious pressure on his young shoulders(& Elliot grows up /smells the coffee & returns the player i know he is)

VR due an apology from many Hearts fans for critisising the time he took to procure the best manager(okay maybe an apology stretching it a bit!!)

it's not great that ruben hasn't even been on the bench to be fair. i'm in the camp that suggest that ruben and eggert could be tried in the full back places. why not try them out in a few reserve games to see how they fare? romanov is always keen to get best use out of the squad, csaba could do himself a favour by utilising resources to the full.

Chas Niceass,

#17 Csabas Press Gig, on the Beeb yesterday, was quite illuminating. Seems he wants as many reserve game places as possible for the U19's and he will try not to use the older players. How that works when they dont play any football at all I've no idea.

#18 chas, can only lead to moans & groans, which in turn lead to bouts of virulent vlad-flu. they need game time to stay fit as well.

I mentioned about Jonsson being tried at right back more than a year ago. only one person commented about it and said good idea. Now everyone is saying it. Recently I suggested trying Berra at left back and only one person made a comment and scoffed at the idea, Yet to me he has pace, and moves forward well, tackle well, if Goncalves can play there so can Berra, just try him and we may have a player who can play in two posiitions.

Noticed on saturday that as soon as the last sub was made Ruben was straight down the tunnel as he realised his day was finished. Probably dressed, out the ground and in the pub before 90mins were up Or did anyone clock him on the park at the end?
