'LISTEN to the ground, there is movement all around, there is something goin' down, and I can feel it . . ."
Yes, John Travolta would be in his element at the new-look Lava and Ignite where, next month, clubbers will discover a new illuminated glass dance-floor – just one of the highlights of a £1million rolling refurbishment.
The Saturday Night Fever da
ncefloor, which glows with every retro colour imaginable, is just one feature in a stunning design concept set to transform the three-room venue.
"There really are some amazing features that are guaranteed to give Lava & Ignite a new injection of energy and desirability," says general manager Bill McGregor. "On top of this, we will bring in top entertainment and great value-for- money promotions to make it one of the hottest places in the city."
That said, the 1214-capacity club has long been one of the Capital's top dance halls. It might be hard to believe, but chances are your parents, grandparents and perhaps even great-grandparents once waltzed, jived or twisted the night away there.
Originally a dance hall back in the 40s, Lava & Ignite is the oldest surviving purpose-built dance venue in Edinburgh and has been known under an array of different names over the years, including The Cavendish, Clouds, Coasters, Outer Limits, Cavendish Diva and then Lava & Ignite, which brings us back to the present.
And while retro might now be the order of the day upstairs, Ignite on the ground floor will be transformed into a slick and stylish room featuring the very best of dance, indie, commercial anthems, and mainstream chart tracks through Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The venue's third room will offer a R'n'B and hip-hop haven for clubbers with a preference for beats.
All three rooms will feature their own DJ and a state-of-the-art intelligent LED lighting system, which will wash areas of each room with an ever-changing colour scheme.
To take the trip back in time on Lava's glass dancefloor, however, you need to be over-25 on Fridays and Saturdays.
"This room is for anyone over 25 who wants to escape the younger crowd downstairs, lose their inhibitions and dance the night away to some of the best party tracks from yesteryear", says McGregor, promising a play-list of classic sounds from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
The over 25 rule is part of a drive to attract a more discerning clientele to the refurbished venue – although the other rooms will be open to over-20s on Fridays and Saturdays, while all three rooms will welcome students over the age of 18 on Wednesdays and Sundays.
With more than 30 years experience in the club industry, McGregor has launched some of the UK's biggest clubs, including Edinburgh's Eros and Elite, Amadeus in Aberdeen, Destiny in Watford and Glasgow, and Equinox in London.
The latest incarnation of Lava & Ignite has been a long-held dream of his since taking over as general manager just over three years ago. He explains, "The first illuminated dance-floor I ever installed was in a club down in London, and I just thought that it would be ideal for Lava, which suited perfectly the New York, New York/Saturday Night Fever theme.
"I'd been wanting to do this for some time, but, of course, first I had to prove that the place was successful to justify the expenditure. We are a very busy club, the busiest club in Edinburgh, and we wanted to keep ahead of the opposition. We like to be ahead of everyone in terms of the concept."
Consequently, the refurbishment, which will take 12 weeks to complete, started in May. Already McGregor can see a difference, although he admits that, as the club is operating normally throughout, it has been hard work.
"I can see it all taking shape, and the customers have started remarking on the changes they can see. We are still open as normal four nights a week, but the three nights that we are shut they have been working day and night.
"There are new carpets everywhere, a new traditional wooden dance-floor and lighting rig downstairs in the main room, Ignite, the centrepiece of which will be a massive chandelier which cost in excess of £10,000. It will look amazing when it is hit with different lighting effects."
Revealing that the actual cost of the revamp is £1 million "and a little more", McGregor adds, "It is a very big scheme. We are going to completely change the image of the club and it is going to be very, very posh.
Ignite will also have a stage where guest acts and celebrities will make personal appearances, the first being two weeks before the re-launch when, next Friday, actor Will Mellor, star of BBC 2's cult sit-com Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps will be on hand to sign autographs.
"On opening night we are going to have Jamie Lomas who is best known for his role as Warren Fox in Hollyoaks," reveals McGregor, adding that future appearances will hopefully include 80's favourites Bananarama.
"The new-look Lava & Ignite really will be the ultimate late night experience," he promises.
