Published Date: 21 November 2008
A CITY councillor burst into tears as his colleagues took the decision to close his old school – before composing himself in time to seal the fate of another.
Despite being a member of the administration, SNP councillor Mike Bridgman abstained from voting on the closure of Lismore Primary, where his daughter is currently a pupil.

He shook with emotion and had to leave the room crying as the closure was voted through at a highly-charged full council meeting.

Fortunately for the Lib Dem/SNP ruling coalition, he returned to vote in favour of axing Westburn Primary in Wester Hailes – which was only passed on the casting vote of Lord Provost George Grubb.

Bonnington Primary in Leith had earlier also had its closure voted through.

Cllr Bridgman, who has spent years fighting to save the Bingham school, said after the meeting: "It was very emotional for me, I went there, my daughter goes there and practically my whole family have been involved.

"But I've done all I can, I've lobbied and done other things for the community, but I'm a member of a party and these decisions have to be taken.

"It's a very sad day and I found it very difficult sitting through that, listening to the school's fate being decided."

The decision means Lismore and Bonnington will now shut at Christmas, while Westburn will close next summer.

Cllr Bridgman's abstention from voting on Lismore did not affect the outcome as that closure, along with Bonnington, saw the city's Conservative group support the administration.

It was the decision to close Westburn, despite a last-minute plea from Chancellor Alistair Darling, which caused most controversy.

Severe mistakes had been made in the consultation process on Westburn which led councillors to believe it was in a worse state than it actually was.

Conservative councillor Jason Rust said: "The consultation process was flawed, there was a whole series of errors. It was wrongly claimed it had the third lowest role in Edinburgh, and there were many others.

"The pupils, staff and community expect a fair hearing and they did not get one."

And Green councillor Alison Johnstone added: "In fact, had the mistakes not taken place, Westburn would not have been on this list at all and we wouldn't be discussing this."

It is widely accepted that Westburn is one of the better schools in the area, has a decent level of achievement and is in a satisfactory condition.

It was also stated that many parents take their children there from outwith the catchment, so good is its standing in the west of Edinburgh.

All of those advantages had been contradicted in an earlier "botched" report, although education leader Cllr Marilyne MacLaren said at the meeting, to the fury of the public gallery: "These were minor errors which had no bearing on this decision."

Once the voting on Lismore and Bonnington was complete, Labour leader Andrew Burns said: "I hope the administration allows councillors to vote with their conscience like they did with Cllr Bridgman and not enforce the whip."

Secretary of Sighthill, Broomhouse and Parkhead Community Council Keith Bell, who made a deputation to the meeting, said afterwards that the mistakes made in the initial consultation had impacted on the decisions.

"We feel let down and that there could have been a petition of 100,000 names and it wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference. This decision was taken months ago."

What was the policy when you guys were in power Andrew?

At least Bridgman has had the common courtesy to explain his position. What about the others in charge who shut schools in their own wards yesterday?

Was it not tears of joy at the closing of the Wester Hailes school, first the school and then the scheme, with a bit of luck it will go back to farm land.

All very well allowing Cllr Bridgman to abstain from closing his own school but he obviously wasn't quite as emotional about closing someone elses !

Local SNP and Lib Dem Councillors obviously must have voted to close Westburn as well. Hope they are able to look local people in the eye and justify what they have done.

#4 Alex, come back to Wester Hailes, a warm welcome awaits you.

What's left?,

Portobello 21/11/2008 12:28:36
Bridgman reall does take the biscuit (or a handful). This is the man who opposed the closure of Lismore while there was a plan to invest in Brunstane Primary, got elected on the back of it, now earns over £30k from the Council, barely turns up to a meeting and can't even be bothered to vote against the closure when his own party propose it. To make matters worse the investment that would have gone to Brunstane now won't.

He is nothing more than a leech, benefitting from the poverty of his ward, and supporting the SNP administration's attempts to run it down.

He is beneath contempt.

Wester Hailien,

Grubb again - whats his problem with Wester Hailes?

He had the casting vote when the pupils from WHEC were attempting to state their case at the City Chambers when the school was under threat and HE decided they should not be allowed to speak.

Democracy - aye right!

By the way #4 what's your problem with WH you always have something to say - come and live with me for a week and I bet I can change your opinion, we are not all druggies and thiefs you know.

The thing about democracy is that it sounds very good in theory, but when it comes time to swing the stapler, the tomatoes just don't wash.

I don't understand this! How can you "spend years fighting to save the Bingham School"....and then abstain from the vote? Why did he abstain? Just because his "gang" wouldn't let him vote against them? When are councillors going to realise that we vote them in to represent THEIR CONSTITUENTS opinions and feelings and not the opinions of their "gang". He should have voted against it if he felt that strongly - no matter what the outcome.

Some support to show for a school by greeting! Why not vote against the closure. Oh but was more than happy to shut Westburn. Another case of an eejit councillor who does sweet nothing at a moment when he should have done!

"Labour leader Andrew Burns said: "I hope the administration allows councillors to vote with their conscience like they did with Cllr Bridgman and not enforce the whip."

Well... er.... actually no. The three labour councillors who voted with their conscience at the Labour closings were suspended from the party for three months. Just to dig the knife in, at the 2007 election two of the three were unsuccessful in their selections to stand as Labour councillors.

Burns definitely has some pair 'o chukkies.

the councilors will go to the next election promising no school closures because there will be no schools to close they will all be packed full with not enough teachers to teach the kids .who really wants to train to be a teacher with no job at the end of your degree.can only see problems ahead the children will be the ones who will be left without a good education .thought politicians had a bit more to give to the job he should have tried to do the right thing people should remember times like this at the next elections

The whip was indeed cracked mark my words for mike who decided not to vote and others who voted for the closures so they could save a dent in their own careers rather than do what was right. I had friends there and they say it was very much apparent.
What kind of goverment do we have? one that bullies others into doing what they want rather than letting them do what is right.

I have no faith left in these people

Complete hypocrisy from Andrew Burns who voted to discipline the three Labour councillors who broke the whip on Lismore in the last administration.

Bad 'shaking with emotion' journalism?

The dude wasn't crying cause of his old school getting cancelled ... it was because he realised he doesn't have a neck. Now, that could upset anyone?

But hey, he might not have a neck but he DOES have a stomach ... but maybe not the stomach for being a cllr ... so back to bubbling?

And he abstained. Eeuuuhhhh!!!

Mike Bridgeman refused to vote to save the school that he was elected to save.

He ABSTAINED.

This is spineless hypocrisy.

This is pathetic.

He has barely turned up to the council. He was elected to do 1 thing - save the primary school - and he abstained.

That's right, the man who promised to save your school refused to vote to save it. This is the kind of man who gives politics a bad name.

The muppets that voted for these SNP/libdem clowns have caused all this. Labour never closed schools. The wee kiddies must be really upset. I noticed the SNP/libdems never talked about closing schools during their election campaigns!! Yes - lets get the idiots out at the next election!!

What was the big sap greeting for?

It's just an unpopular, run-down school that's being closed. The school bairns will be taught in another school nearby. No big deal, really.

I'd hate to see what sort of emotional state he'd get into if he was forced to skip a meal!

#34 - I've got a solution which I hope you'll like. Why don't we go round to the houses of all those people who vote SNP/LibDem and in no particular order:
Smash their windows
Drag them out through through the broken glass so we can hear their screaming
Beat them with police batons
Give them a taste of the gas
Let the police dogs savage them
Lock them up for 10 years minimum
Do the same to all their relatives and neighbours, their friends, work colleagues, anyone in their golf club, their tennis coach, the guy who once sat next to them on the bus..........
